Weather Forecast

G'day Gang,

As of late due to work/family commitments I've been finding it a challenge to get out and flick a line. Basically whenever I find an opportunity I'm packing the car and heading out regardless of weather conditions.

I got the chance today however the conditions were not so family friendly. I'd like to learn a little bit about weather forecasting and what's ideal/not ideal.

My question to you guys is what sites/resources do you use for forecasting and at what stage do you call a day off due to gnarly conditions. What do you look for? Wind speed and direction, temp, humidity? Current?

Would love if you guys could educate me or point me in the right direction for some useful sites or android applications that you use.

Cheers!

Oz

Hey Oz. I use 2 web sites, weather zone for weather its going to rain or not and
WillyWeather for wind, tide, moon predictions. You can set up both to be pretty location specific.
As for when do I stop fishing, when I feel like it.

These are the 2 that I use, I have them both set up for the Tweed River, excellent sites, very easy to use and they are right most of the time.

Considering cancelling etc, it really depends on if i'm land based or in the boat, who i'm with and if i can actually be f*#cked going. Really isn't a set thing for me

I use BOM and willy weather.

Try to stay away from the forecasts that are in the town/district forecasts - they may say scattered showers but mean there is a 90% of 25-50mm of rain....or they may say showers and mean 5% of 1-10mm. I use the charts and get information from them regarding wind speed, direction and rainfall.

The 3 day explorer (I think its called) on the bom site is great for seeing what an area will do in the next 24-72 hours.

Windfinder pro is awesome

It really depends on where you're fishing and what you're fishing out of, depends how sore your ass can get before you're over it

Weatherzone & Willyweather for me. I don't much care what the weather is doing unless I'm heading out on a boat, which is pretty rare for me. I just look which way the wind is coming from & if it's going to get strong or not. If it is going to pick up a bit then I'll choose to fish a spot that puts the wind at my back or use techniques that allow me to fish into a stiff headwind.

Willyweather for me, check wind speeds regularly though cause in my experience there predictions change rapidly within 12 hours. Always reliable tho

Yep thier wind predictions do change pretty quick sometimes. Seeing I'm landbased & not in any danger if the wind does something unexpected I just use the weatherzone wind predictions, they are pretty close most of the time.

I forgot to mention anything about when I call the trip, it really depends on who I'm with. If it's just me or me & my 15yr old I'll call it when I just can't be bothered anymore or when there's lightning floating around. He's as mad as I am so fishing in rain, wind & hail is no biggie. If I've got anyone else with me though I let them say when they've had enough & take them home.
