Mate, a 3-6 kg rod and 3-4000 reel, 10lb braid and at least 12lb leaders. This will keep things light enough to cast all day in a boat, landbased go heavier! This would be a combo to target Jew only but-
My pb jewie was a 10 kg 92cm fish on a 4-8 lb rod and a Shimano 1000 reel! While chasing bream! Had to chase it 5lb braid so don't think real heavy gear is required!
More skill than muscle

So what rod and reel combo would ppl recommend? I currently have various light estuary rods from custom to loomis and daiwa and just purchased an x light samaki to try. These will be too light I think for Jew fishing.

Reels I am thinking in the 2000 size class.

Thanks in advance

If your chasing them in the river I suggest using a rod around 3-6kg, something stiff enough to be able to sink the hook on larger jig heads invariably needed to chase fish in moving water. I've got a samurai 302 and samaki c12 4-7kg and these rods cover just about all my river jews.

I'm not too serious with my jewies but I run a shimano T-curve revolution snapper 702 and a 4000 stradic CI4. For estuaries it doubles up as a decent, big dusky flathead rod throwing heavier plastics.

I've recently got a 4000 Sustain spooled with 30lb braid over a Loomis Pro Green 7'10 rated at 8-15lb. It's probably a bit more grunt than you're looking at but you can scale it down. Can't wait to get a fish on it.
Mo TAckle have Pro Greens on sale at the moment for $230 but they are 7'10 and one piece.

Im getting a custom built duff rod for this application.. I am going to team it up with a 4000 stell with 20lb braid.. If your chasing them in the swan river they can range in size from 500grams to 18+ kg I think if you hook a mulloway in the swan on a lure you dont want to loose her! specially if they are in the larger than 10kg model thats a fairly massive archeivement in my eyes..

Hey mate

I've got a 3-6kg Lamiglas Blue Acres in the classifieds for $220. Bought it for $395, I reckon this rod would be awesome for chasing jewies, I had a stradic ci4 3000 on it which doubled up as a bass and meaty bream stick.

Although what others have mentioned sound pretty good too, I reckon Steve at Duffrods would be able to make you a great rod! If you shoot him an email at steve@duffrods.com.au saying what you roughly want he'd sort you out

Todd

That's the problem sometimes. The place I fish has mostly fish in the 2-6 kg size but I've been smoked on 10lb braid a few times by much larger fish that run for cover. I guess it depends on where you are fishing.

It really depends on where and what size fish are in the area.
In Sydney Harbour I fish a Steez chilidog with a stella 3000 loaded with 11lb fishing a 20lb leader. Fish are usually in the 2-6kg with the occassional 10kg. The bottom where we fish is pretty good and not to much structure so the light line and leader will land most.
Hawkesbury I wont fish anything under my Millerods Beast Buster LC, Branzino loaded with 30lb and 50lb leader. I still get done over on this outfit every now and then. The bottom there is rock bar after rock bar in massive current and fish to who knows how big!
Jews dont seem to be leader shy and have caught many jews, even the harbour small ones on 50lb leaders. Just make sure you use a loop knot for lure connection.
The lures I usually use are 20gm or more, fishing plastics I use a 1oz jig head regular in Hawkesbury to get through the current so heavy rods are the only ones that can fish them well.
