Which G Loomis GLX? DSR, SR or TSR?
Hi all,
I'm looking at getting a G Loomis GLX rod but am unsure which one to get. At the moment the majority of my fishing is done from a kayak in estuaries and inshore locations. Targeting mainly bream, whiting, flathead, tailor and all the usual estuary fish. I'm also hoping to see my first king or jewie this year if I'm lucky. At the moment I'm using a DSR820S INTL Blend. It's an awesome rod as its sensitive and ballsy, plus the length is good for yak fishing. I use it mainly for lightly weighted plastics and I'm branching out to hardbody topwaters and cranks. I'm tossing up between the DSR820S GLX, SR842-2 GLX or the TSR862-2 GLX. I thinking I'm leaning towards the DSR and TSR based on what I've read but would like opinions from those who have used either or all of the rods I've listed. Rods will be paired with a 2000 Sol or Fuego. The TSR would be awesome but would it be too long for kayak use? I know people replace the stripper on the DSR and move it further up the blank, but with how it is from factory, what is casting like? Are the handles on these rods too longer to comfortably work lures for long periods? Would recoils be alright with 10lb PE and up to 10lb FC leader? Before anyone suggests a Duffrod, i have considered it but despite the good feedback don't have the money for one right now. I can get the three rods for a good price which is why I'm really considering them. Cheers, Chris |

hey mate i run a DSR GLX with a 2000 fuego and love it! fish only from a boat but imagine the shorter length would suit a yak more.. They are stiff and ballsy so do suit a plastics rod alot more but in saying that i quiet often throw topwater and cranks and although not perfectly suited i agree its still sh**s on 9/10 rods. never used a TSR so cant comment and do want one myself so have to wait for others to direct you there.
As far as the butt and stripper go i heard all that talk before i got mine and a shortened butt may assist you if your yak fishing but i find if perfectly fine how it is once you get used to it and only had 1 windy i think in months with the original stripper with awesome casting distance considering the rod length. I run Frog 6lb and usually 6lb leader, sometimes 8 for bass. The guides do get pretty thin towards the top so absolute maximum i would say 10 you should get away with if running slim beauty knots or similiar. Hope this helps mate |

Hey Chris,
I own the the dsr and tsr both in the glx versions. Dsr - ballsy rod punches way above it's weight, I use mine mainly for topwater work and plastics, very versatile and light as. It is a crsiper blank with a fast action. As u have stated already u enjoy using ur intl dsr due to it's length and if u don't mind the butt section on ur current rod the glx should not bother u in the slightest. TSR- also a very ballsy rod (landed a 93cm flatty on 4lb braid with 4lb fc rock leader), I currently run mine for crank baits and shads etc also blades and vibes, if I need to I will useit for plastics work but I personally don't like using it for this. Also I reckon this rod for topwater work is rubbish compared to my dsr, I can impart a way better action into the lure with my other rod. The softer tip is great for less hooks pulled but when u get used to the stick very little times will u pull them. I personally can't comment on the sr but any blank u choose u can't go wrong with, good luck with the decision and keep us posted. Cheers Kyle Also where aremu located mate? |

Thanks for the responses.
In terms of casting distance with the DSR, even if it was slightly decreased it wouldn't bother me too much. It's not uncommon for a fish to hit the lure pretty much besides the yak. I do use plastics a lot more as i think they're a bit more versatile so the extra fast action of the DSR helping it take the lead at the moment - though i'm still keen on more feedback ![]() Kyle - i'm from around the Penrith area. |

I think once you get a GLX, you won't go wrong whatever the choice. I've not used the TSR so I can't quite comment there. As for the SR842-2, if your main quarry is bream and everything else sub-2kg, then that'll be fine but if you hope to encounter a kingie or jewie, better off with the DSR. I don't use my DSRs for bream now. I use only megabass for bream but I absolutely love using the DSR for snapper and have landed 3kg+ snapper with it.

I have both tsr and dsr glx rods, the tsr is my preferred rod for cranks and surface and the dsr is deffinently better for plastics and bigger twitch/jerk baits. Both Awsome rods. The tsr is 2 piece so this maybe an advantage for traveling with a kayak.

i use a tsr out of a kayak and its absolutely awesome! i mainly use it for throwing hard bodies or blades on light fluoro straight through....length is def not too long for a yak unless perhaps your fishing around trees and stuff, if your in open water it really doesnt matter...the grip is a nice length so it wont jab into you when sitting down. i run mine with a certate 2004 and it matches beautifully, used to have it on a ci4 1000 but the reel was too light. as for the rod im not sure how it would go casting heavier lines as i have never really tried it, i have other rods i prefer for plastics or topwater but nothing beats the feeling when the tsr gets loaded up!!!!!

Hey mate I use a tsr and Dsr too, I share many of the opinions given but can add the following!
The Dsr is best with a 1000 reel due to how close the stripper guide is, my fave rod hands down... Topwater gold, I used it when I borrowed a mates hobie though and the long bottom grip got in the way a fair bit. I am also a fan of the feel of the uplocking eggshape reelseat as you can keep a finger on the blank and feel everything so I'd recommend to you the tsr!! |

Does anyone know how long in inches each rod is from butt to the top of the foregrip?

SR is a different type of rod altogether really buy saying that is not a lot different to the tsr and DSR but you will always hear the argument of DSR vs TSR I have them both I like the DSR better and as has been mentioned before its a ballsy rod for what it is but really you can't go wrong matts right though I asked him for reel advise for the DSR and 1000 size is perfect if there was any differnece between the two it would be ever so slight anyway... As for recoils I'm almost 100% sure that all GLXs come with a sic tip now and I love recoils some hate them dunno why though.. You wouldn't go any higher than 10lb on those rods either hope this helps

SR is a more all rounder type rod I'm pretty sure it's te black blank with standard loomis grip from memory and was made from the most popular loomis rod models that were proven performers but with glx graphite this is from memory but I'm sure I'm right. It wasnt really a target specific rod like the DSR and TSR but we all know that that doesn't mean a thing.

The TSR862-2 and SR842-2 are virtually the same rod except the TSR is 2 inches longer. The DSR however is a totally different kettle of fish(pun intended),this rod punches way above its 2-4kg rating and in my opinion is the best all round rod to come from the Loomis range. Its perfect with a 1000 size reel, extra fast action and recoils, you cant go wrong. My one and only critisism of this rod would be the handle(a bit high) but you get used to it.

Yes referring to GLX rods, identical blank material, identical casting weight, identical taper and power rating, like i said 2 inches difference between the two and different handle(a bit of black foam for the TSR).
