Canal Kayak stick

Looking for a light fast taper rod that I can use for canal work out of the kayak, specifically skip casting and pitching plastics into tight spots, incl unweighted plastics.

My seven foot and even 6'6" rods ain't working for me, just too long for any casts apart from vertical release type lobs.

As i will only be using the rod occasionally I wanted to spend around the $200 mark give or take.

Have considered a 2nd hand Vapor, rods in the Major Craft range like the Corkish or Beneyro, and possibly the Nordic Stage 6' Gunslinger, not sure of the rod's taper though.

There are the NS Hurricane rods - not sure if there is enough grunt to handle a big bream or a small GT etc.

Would be for bream but don't want a superlight trout rod as will be for in tight structure etc. Then again I discounted the Miller Wharfie as it would be a little on the heavy side for me.

Who has a rod for this purpose? Opinions?

Cheers

Mick.

I was thinking the Vapor 6 foot would be better? I have a 6'6" and was thinking for skip casting from a yak the shorter the better really.......what do others think?

I am used to underhand skipping from a very high cast deck on my boat.

I dont have any problems skip casting from the yak with my vapor 66. The way i cast is i whip the rod tip in a circular motion and let fly as the tip is about 10-15cm above the water, sorta hard to explain... but it seems to work!

Thanks for that

I have two 6'6" so maybe it's just some practice needed, i've only had the one session in the kayak in the canals so far.

Black Label SSS 6011ULXS
The super sensitive model. The shortest rod in the range and one of the most sensitive rods Daiwa has ever developed. The 6011ULXS is designed for ultra light soft plastic fishing where sensitivity is the utmost importance. Its highly sensitive tip transmits the slightest vibration to the angler and it is particularly suited to methods where the lure is contacting structure like the “no sinker” method, dropshotting and ultra light Carolina rigging.

The combination of its short length and soft tip also makes perfect for pinpoint casting small hard bodies, topwaters and stick minnows to structure holding fish.

6' 1 - 185cm ... 2-8lb ,, 1/48 - 1/4 ... shop around and you'll get it for $250

Thanks Toga - I had my eye on that one too but did not think there was any way I would get it at a price in the 200's.

Would count out the wharfie Mick, super light rods! That one for sale in the classifieds is a bargain, they usually retail for around $600!

Can be fished light or heavy aswell!

90% of my breaming is skipping plastics in canals and I only use 7' rods... It's just practice mick

Thanks Todd for letting me know that. Does make my decision even harder though Yes that is a super bargain too.

I thought the wharfie would not be so great with UL weighted plastics so that's interesting. I also have a real stump puller of a 6'6" 2-4kg already so i guess that kinda crossed over into that realm too.

Bargeass - Don't tell me that I've already sold my Samurai 201 from lack of use. Maybe this is just an excuse to get another rod and more yak specific gear ;-)
