Los vs Nitro
Ive just put a deposit down on a Sustain 5000 (the new model ) and was checking rods out today. The shop where I was looking used to stock Nitros but now stock Lox rods. The rod I was interested in is the Nitro Distance spin magnum rated at 4-8kg . The Lox rods look very similar with the blank and similar in price as well. Anyone have any idea on which is better in performance and warranty ect ?

Depends what you want to fish for. The magnum butt is a very nice rod, but I find it better for 4000 size reels and 20lb braid- even though its rated at 6kg, the rod handles the extra line size fine. Good for inshore stuff and for spinning for salmon/tailor and small tuna. That reminds me, mine got broken in exxy on a shark and I havent got the new sections for it!
For a 5000 size reel and for a bit more power for snapper and other demersal fish work and for heavier spinning, try the viper. My stella 5000SW sits on the viper real nice and 30lb braid matches up well. Its what I use on spanglies in exmouth and dont usually have too much trouble with them unless they are in coral and Im not quick enough on the extraction. |

The Sustain 5000 and 4000 are the same size reel but the 5000 has the deeper spool. I'm going to put 20lb braid on it. I want to use it for reds, salmon and Bonnie's. I'm lucky I work driving boats and our jetty has a reasonable population of Jew as well. I've dragged a few out and have been smashed up a few times which usually happens when the head back under the wharf.
7'6 would be a good length for casting distances too. Thanks for the info . |

Magnum butt seems like its your choice then. They handle 20lb fine. Plenty of power in them. You can get two models- the split grip and regular grips- or they make a travel version which is what I have as well. Great rods.

Cheers Brad. I'm going to Sydney next week and am going to call in to a tackle store at Rockdale that has them in stock. He wouldn't give me a price over the phone but says he charges below rrp.

if the shop in rockdale is the one on princess hwy a few hundred meters down from bay st heading toward rockdale plaza, youll be sure to get a good price !! The owners name is Goo (aka gary), he runs the place with his wife, been going there for years and years. The amount of high end gear he carrys puts alot of stores to shame !!! Great bloke to top it off also.

No worries. He never gives you prices over the phone, but rest assured he is very competetive on prices. Try not to walk out with more than you went for its very easy to do there !!!
