Opinions please. Boat fit out.
Hey guys.
Just curious to see/hear of anyone that has a boat around the 4.1-4.3 metre length with a side console. Does it annoy you? Is it too big in a small boat. Just finalizing my design of my new boat. I want to keep the console as small as possible but I do want it there as tiller steering on long runs isn't something I'm That keen on. Plus it's more fun with a side console haha. |

I have a 4.45m with a side console and love it!
it does take up a little space and the weight distribution needs to be looked into but the convenience of having the console and the advantages it provides (forward steering, mounting electronics, storage space underneath the console, shelter it gives) far outweigh any negatives that might come about from having the console there. Also seriously how often would you fish from the space that the console in the boat will take up??? hardly ever i found especially if you have forward and aft casting decks and the console in those size boats is minimal anyway. my only suggestion would be to have it mounted as far back as practical without impeding your rear casting deck to give you as much usable floor space as possible. regards |

I got a 4.35m side console.
Does the console get in the way? Well yes it does. Would a tiller allow more room? Yes it would Would it be as comfy to drive as a forward steer set up? Nope, not for those long runs I like the console for its ability to store small items out of the way, mount electronics and guages and its handy for rod storage too! I'd keep the side console if I were to get another small-ish boat.

I've had a 3.85m and 4.30m Tiller steer and also now have a 4.5m Side console currently.
If you are not making long runs and are only going to have a sounder at the helm then a tiller is cheaper and gives more room, also it is a better ride in most small boats sitting more aft. I would make sure that the motor is a later model with tilt and trim and steering arm control so you don't get a dead arm. The console in my latest boat does provide more dry storage and also shields you from icy winds in winter (too bad about the passenger though) Depends on the boat layout for mine, a good example might be the smaller Polycraft or Quinny Hornet, i would go for the tiller but a side in a model up from that. I have a 4.2 blue fin tiller but I brought a HDS with structure scan and a stereo so I had to put a console in to house all the electrical gear in. Wish I got a forward steer now. Got a stiff arm trolling for Spanish yeastrtday.

I own a 4.35 hornet tiller steer. I guess its a personal thing but I do prefer it over a console model because I spend a lot more time fishing than motoring. I just like the extra room to move around the boat.

Problem solved
Great little idea, they are around 600 or 750 with steering helm and wheel... Looking at putting one in my 385...
