loomis rods

Its my understanding that Loomis rods are awesome, and usually priced $500 plus.

In tackle shops I have felt them um ...wow....nice!

Reading this months "Fishing World" I came across a Loomis ad

a range of Loomis rods priced from $210 to $310,

named the GL2 Rods.

How do these rods rate? Understanding that u get what u pay for, would not expect them to be in the 500 buck class but would be interested in your opinions

Gday.
Not all loomis rods are that pricey. Their base models are the GL2, then the GL3, then the GLX and then the cream...the IMX!

I own a SJR720 GL2, the rod is awesome and for their price pretty hard to beat as an allround rod. If you want to get into using the better quality rods, this is a great level to start at. You WILL notice the difference over the entry level rods (Starlo's, etc).

Another range to look at if your looking at the lower prices on top quality rods are the Strudwick SPS. Awesome plastics rod!

Loomis

Kingpin,
The actual order in which the grades of graphite go is GL2, GL3, IMX then GLX being the coota gear. But in saying that they are starting to bring out rods that are purpose built for the job you want to do and get away from I spose guys having a pissing comp with who's got the better rod(for lack of better words). Take the Spinnerbait Series of rods they are undoubtedly one of the best rods you will throw a spinnerbait with. You also have the crankbait series Dropshot Series and so on and so forth. Any way getting back to the original post about the GL2 range They are an extremely good rod for the money that they cost and nothing else stacks up to them for the dollar(not only in that price range but right through the entire dollar range). Working in a tackle shop lets me see and play with alot of rods that most people usually wouldnt be able to without going to at least three different tackle outlets and then unfortunately the last rod you looked at is only a memory when you get to the next tackle shop and you want to compare them against each other. In the improved GL2 range there are rods to suit anglers in all facets of fishing and they are all made of top quality materials and are topped off with top quality componetry. See your local Loomis dealer and see if he can get you a couple in and if not give me a call or e-mail and I will try to give you as much info as possible.

That's precisely what I'm talking about... Alconites guide are crap... over rated and over priced... all the decent rods from jpn use ti-sic.... or sic2..... If you see what fireline have done to one of my older rod (alconite) you would understand why I'm passionate about the topic...

I love the look of the ti-sic guides, very sleek indeed, but I don't see the need for them. I've never had a problem with my alconites, and I really give them a flogging.

All my Millerods also have Alconites, and I'm yet to hear of anyone faulting (or even questioning) a BreamBuster...

Well I got a groove on mine.... the 4lbs fireline didn't like it much after that.... These was the days that I only have one finesse rod.

HUGE call there Glenn...
As awesome as the Sics are, Alconites are fine for anything breamin or light sportsfishing can throw at you. Youa re the first person Ive heard of that has ever had a problem with them. Perhaps it was simply a dodgy one off guide?

Having said the above...I'd still rather Sics on my rods, but I'm not about to pay the extra for them either...

Are the sics you mention the same as the ones on the Struddies? If so they are crap, they rust as soon as you put them near saltwater.

I think in Australia we have to pay premium for things that other people take for granted, I'm not sure if its because there are too many middleman trying to get rich along the way or what...

You could be right Dave, it might be a one-off, but when you're start getting grove on the guides I thought its about time to stop using it.....

Its interesting though people talk about Alconite's as the best things since slice bread...... I think just good marketing........... And BTW, Dave, sic are not that expensive... I got a full set of the new top-end T-ATSG (ti-sic) guide (Single foot ultra light weight guide) for about AUD$75 (A few months ago).

whatever

Alconites are sweet,
they are a nice guide at an econimical price

I have got a samuria s002 built with titanium sic and they are nice but they are bulky guides compared with the alconites which are nice and light, and fine guage, and are less spooky looking for finiky species like trout in clear water.

I have 3 rods build with alconites and have done soo soo sooo many hours over the last 2 seasons bream fishing to out this into prospective in the july uni hols last year i caught 250= fish in two weeks with maybe 20 hard pulling fish weighing more than 1 kilo. I have got no grooves, my guides arn;t "sticky".

For all those guys who are not cashed up to the max, or are studying and broke like me, jump on the alconote's band wagon, give them a go and you'll love em!

If big manufacture companies like struddy, loomis, Black Diamond (orginally) Shimano, Diawa, Millerrods etc like them then they are good for me too!

I'm with you there Shauno. I've got 2 Loomis with Alconites and I've got no complains about them. There's a bit of rust on one of mine but it still works fine so... The way I see it, I'm fishing for bream and not tuna or spanish mack so my guides are not going to be burnt out anytime soon!
