Baitcaster virgin

Hey Guys,

I'm looking at picking up a baitcaster for work on victorian natives, mostly yellowbelly and some cod work and maybe the odd snapper/jewwie session as well.

Now I'm a right hand'er, and I adhere to the old addage of turning the handle with the left hand when using spin gear. Does the same rule apply with Baitcasters?

I've never used one but I'm keen to pick up an outfit! Slowly getting my head around the terms and required gear ratios

Cheers!

I am right handed. Cast with my right hand and wind with my left.

I have recently started using a baitcaster and went through the same decision process and ended up with a left hand wind baitcaster. I feel it definately was the right decision.

I'm a righty and I just can't wind with me left hand, it feels wrong. I have to cast and switch

I do the same as stella_fella. Though I am learning to cast like a lefty! I cast left handed with my spinning gear.

Thanks for the replies guys!

You have made my mind up on that one.
I'm extremely comfortable using my left with the spinning gear so I think you have convinced me I'll take the the baitcasters in a similar fashion!

Much appreciated.

Now all I need to do is pick an outfit and learn how to use it....

I went out to stockton beach chasing salmon with one of my best mates who winds left handed, I had to borrow his gear and found it easier to turn the rod upside down and wind backwards

If you are casting hundreds of times in a day that is a lot of switching. You will be suprised how quickly you can adjust to winding with your left hand. Definately worth giving it a go for a day on the water.

haha yeah some people cant do the left hand wind thing, i found with spinning gear it took a few sessions before it became second nature.

some people seem to really struggle though!

Hey mate, I am right handed and only started using my left hand to wind with spinning gear earlier this year. A couple of years ago however I picked up a curado (right handed) and now actually find it difficult to use this reel. Definently go for the lefty baitcaster

Thanks for the input mate!

That's exactly the type of experience I was looking for

Sell off the curado and get a left hand model! I'm all the right hand lovers will be all over it.

Paps i teach young fella's at work to use a hawk and trowel and i'm always making them swap them over to the other hands funny to watch but they get better skills so back to fishing i've found in the over haning trees i'm forever swaping over and yep funny to watch but what i say to the boy's at work i had to apply to myself "your left hand is no different to your right so switch the brain over" so have a laugh at yourself and you'll be casting better with your opposite hand,,easy..just don't let ya mates see ya

I actually find it a loteasier to cast with my left hand than to wind, and quite often will, I'm just not as accurate. In open water situations I'll more often than not cast with my left, just not around structure.

im right handed.
for spin i cast with my right and wind with my left
for bc i cast with my right and wind with my right - that way theres less switching hands when palming.

I remember many years ago , reading about the benefits of using your spin gear left hand wind and strong hand for casting....
Why not try....... a couple of casts and a GT 1.5kg hit my wonder wobbler on 6 lb line......
Eventually landed it.
I use both any time , whatever I have but prefer left hand wind for spin and bc...
