Hey,
Watched a show on this the other night, apparently there is a massive dredging opperation going on to deepen the harbour to take massive tankers as part of a Coal Seam operation. They were literally bulldozing the mangroves and taking massive amounts of sluge from a harbour that has always had heavy industry on it. Common sense says there is going to problems once you disturbe this sediment. There was a pro fisherman pulling his nets and the barra looked like the ones in the photo's. In all it looked like another monumental stuff up by the Govt, which was approved 6 weeks after they came into power. All the Govt wanted to talk about was the massive boost in jobs to the region, and that they expected minimal environmental impact. This is the sort of environmental mismanangement you expect in a third world country. For all the crazy marine parks and restrictions in place that make little sense, they allow this to happen on the door step of the Great Barrier reef. As they say in Charlie Brown.. Good Grief...

I dont think it is a big mystery, I am pretty sure i know what it is, it is Acid Sulfate disease cause by exposing the sulfate rich sediments to air, it creates sulfuric acid and this has been seen in QLD before, very similar ulcers on bass and other effected species.
Ill see if i can dig up the article i was reading on this a while ago, when i was trying to understand how dangerous it can be to disturb those sediments. Dan |

Rumor has it, the Pro's are doing this intentionally for a compensation from the LNG Plants.
They are saying 90% of the Barra and sharks they are catching are diseased. But, if you keep up to date with Johnny Mitchell guides on the harbour. You'll find none of them diseased, this is because the diseased barra are hanging together ( Well, most of them). So once you find one, your find the lot. And, the fisho's knows this and are making a big scene about the whole situation. Sure, there are some diseased barra which CAN cause bad news for the Pro fishermen and they do deserve some recognision. But, they are all in it for a payout from the government not for the status of the harbour. I am not %100 sure on this, it's just the word on the street. But the pro's are injuries sharks and RA.YS on purpose. Just for compensation. So you have the government covering there failures and the Pro's aren't any better... But no one knows the truth, rumors are just rumors. I'm only putting in what I've been told.. I have no judgement in any of this. Last edited by -Pivot-; 09-11-2011 at 04:38 AM. |

I used to work for an aquaculture company that grew barra, murray cod and golden perch. The company used bore water for the re-circ systems, the water was changed reguraly, but prior to the fresh bore water being put into the system it was held in large water tanks and airated for about 8 hours. This was due to a high level of sulphur in the water and the ariatioun helpked clear it. At times there was a requirement to use water that wasn't airated as much and at times did cause a similar looking disease, I can't recall the actual name of it but it went out of control at times causing large rates of death. So this matter is not great for this waterway and I feel sorry for the people that live off it.
