Garfish on surface lures?

Hey guys i was just wondering how many of you's target gars with lures?
Went for a fish yesterday and landed 2 on scumdogs.
There were heaps following and they would always strike but they would never hook up exception for 2 of the bigger one. They were around 50-55cm's
I was just wondering what size trebles you would use for a more consistent hook up rate?

my dad uses really small hooks here in WA for gardy he said they got small beak shaped mouths and they tend to nip at there prey could be cheeky and put a small single hook on and see if that helps..

I was catching a couple on lightly weighted plastics around a exposed reef. Working them along the top they would make tiny splashes as they went for the lure.

If your using the 48 mm scumdog they have # 14 trebles on them so maybe try #16-18 (if you can get them) but you may find the lighter weight allows the lure to fall on its side rather than belly down. If so you could use the smaller on just the tail. I was told by a tackle shop owner he was getting them on small sinking stick baits worked fast and erratically which is OK if your after a feed - not as visual as a surface offering. Pat.

Also add a another split ring to the back treble. It helps when they are tentative.
