drag upgrades

Hi guys,
Just wondering, would it be worth replacing the felt drag washes in a Stella 2500fe to Chase fish in the tropics on light line or leave them as is? I'll be using 10-20lb braid on a 2-4kg t curve.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

The stock drag can put out 9kg of silky smooth pressure. I reckon that 9kg is more than enough for what you are doing.

Wink

Mate that should be great fun on that 2-4kg rod!!

Sounds like a good excuse too match ya Stella up with a 3-6kg rod!

I know guys that catch 10 kg kings on their 2500 stellas!
My Stella will never be flogged though using 3lb braid for bream.....

It really depends on what type of life your drag has already had. Stock washers are fine, but if you have caught a few decent fish on it then the washers are pretty well worn in so to speak. Once the washers are compressed they bulge at the sides and it makes it harder to obtain decent smooth reliable settings. Jolting drags loose fish, no two ways about it. If its not smooth its very very hard to fish with confidence.

If you are getting a good range of drag pressure from 0 - 9kg and its still silky smooth then don’t bother replacing them.

On the other hand if its a trip to the tropics and you encounter the fish of a lifetime then you don't want to be second guessing your drag capabilities. A lost fish on a sticky or notchy drag could have you screaming for blue murder. Imagine loosing a bone fish to a set of washers you thought you should replace.

Majority of tropical fish have long decent runs so you need to ensure its smooth even when it gets warm.

If the reel is basically brand new or has stuff all use then just go with what you have and maybe pull it apart to be sure and give the drag a quick service, but if you want a set of carbontex to replace the standards, I can whip you up a set no worries.

Cheers

Lee

I guess if it has no worries straight out of the box, then I might just wait and see. can't wait to catch a big queen on a bream weight rod
Might hit u up for a drag upgrade if all goes according to plan

Am i right in assuming that a 3000 sized shimano spin reel is the same size body as a 2500 just with more spool capacity ?
