Touching up hook points

Do you touch up your hooks?
After a 20 minute spell with loosing 4 good fish
I found the hook point dulled/crushed.

We all get trebles on a hardbody and are pretty sharp/sticky
out of the box. Depending what lures you buy.
We buy trebles to replace others or still replace decent trebles
With ultra sticky/ fine wire trebles.which are supplied in foam retainer.

But

We buy jigheads in a pack
That the hooks bounce around in the pack or our tackle trays
Bashing into the lead weights.

Have you thought about your hook points being dull
Do you use sharping stones and touch up
Your jighead points ?
Please give me your thoughts ?

Hey mate,

Is that the small pen size dimaond sharpener you're referring to.

Wanted to ask as I bought one of these and wanted to know the best way of using it with small trebles and hooks.

Do you simply rub the treble back and forth along the valley of the sharpener or is there a little more to it.

Cheers mate.

EZE Lap once made a diamond file that was about the size of 2 10c pieces side by side and fit onto a key ring or whatever else around your neck...

Not sure if they do now, but I will say its invaluable as it has a hook point groove that does a pretty good job at sharpening those dull days.

Apologies only saw this today. Yep the pen one with a groove. I usually drag it one way only in the direction where the hook point is pointing. But I have seen it work the other way ( but there is more chance of rolling the point over)
If that makes sense.

personally I doubt that those hook sharpeners work. They may be ok for fixing damaged or broken points, but I doubt they would improve the sharpness of a hook point that has dulled from everyday use. The problem lies with the design, the shape of the hook, and the difficulty in maintaining the hook point at a consistent angle to the stone.

if your hard pressed use the top edge of your car window, works a treat on sharpening anything to a decent edge.

Haha wow I been waiting for that response for ages.

Ok excellent thanks. So basically pressing down and dragging the treble point the direction the hook point is facing.

Will definitely give it a crack.

Yep Keeping the stone still and drag the treble the way the hook point is pointing. I like 35 to 40 degrees I use my finger as a guide to keep the angle consistent. This definitely works just check with the nail test before and after and you will be convinced. Dont press too hard. light swipes work best.

I may be wrong but I thought I heard somewhere not to sharpen chemically sharpened hooks as you will only make them worse. Is there any truth to that?

No truth in it. I do the nail test and if it sticks for me, then its good enough otherwise I touch it up till it sticks. Many Chem Sharpened hooks dont stick out of the packet esp in larger sizes. As mentioned before do the nail test to proove it to yourself.
