First loomis! Your thoughts and what reel size?
Hi guys,
I recently purchased a G Loomis SR842-2 GLX (yet to arrive so havent felt it yet) Was wondering what size reel would it be suited too? I will primarily be using it for bream, flatties, redfin, trout etc.... Can it be used for anything else a bit bigger? Thanks

whats your budget? and brand preferance? any of the 1000-2000 range will be appropriate. wouldnt bother with a 2500 personally.
i've got a dsr820 coming, hoping to match it up to a luvius 2004, or a rcs blinged gekka mx 2004. depends what feels best on the day. |

Havent really got a budget in mind. I do have a certate finesse 2004 but wasnt sure if it's the right size? I want something with a shallow spool if i go to the 2500 size eg 2506, 2508 etc.

your certate might be just the ticket mate. for your intended purpose i dont imagine you'd need anything more. depends how it feels on the rod

Jewels I only used a 2508 exist and a 2500 sol on it. To me I preferred the sol but I'm just a weirdo, I'm sure your certate will be perfect
Can it be used for anything bigger? Why not, probably not as suited as a snapper stick but still do-able. I was never game enough to use it on salmon and kings etc, however I have bullied some big bream on heavy drag from under pontoons www.breammaster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34702

that rod balances with ant reel from 160 to 270 gms so to keep it light get a exist 2506 and get a 2500 spool so you have a finesse reel and a heavier reel and still under 200 grms.

I have just purchased a Loomis DSR820s which was recommended to me (local advice from experienced fisherman) to match up nicely with my Stradic 2500FI. I have found the combo very comfortable to use and the weight (for those that might think it heavy) has not been an issue. Advice was that this combo would allow me to carry out all bream activities from hb's (my favourite) to sp's and surface luring as well as chase mulloway (schoolies). My knowledge and experience is limited but I am enjoying the fishing. As an aside I have just upgraded the Stradic to a new Twinpower 2500FC as they have been available very cheaply. Regards.

Bit off topic, but what are the main differences between the SR842-2 and the DSR820S.
When it comes to Loomis rods, these are the two i read most about on this forum. |

Quote:
Beauty about the loomis is that any reel you get will balance on it. I've used a 270g (shimano sahara), a 235g reel (caldia kix 1500), 240g reel (certate 2000), 200g reel (shimano ultegra 1000), 175g reel (luvias 1003) and they all balance equally. Just depends on how much line you want to have on your reel. For most breamin' applications, you won't need more than 50m of line but if you think you will tangle with a mulloway regularly, then you might want to have some extra line. Apart from that, I'd favour reels with shallow spools (daiwa 1003, 2004 or shimano stradic 1000fml) so I don't hold 75% of line I will never use. |
