Reel re-painting.

Recently got my hands on a Certate Finesse Custom 2506 which has some serious cosmetic issues, particularly with peeling paint on the body of the reel, predominantly on the reel foot and rotor. I'm concened that this will lead to corrosion although it hasn't set in yet.

Are there any spray-painters or handymen out here who would be able to totally re-paint the reel? Also what kind of cost would that involve?

Cheers.

Pimp my lure does reel painting, but I forgot how much it was. Or you could find a local hobby or car spray painter and pay them to do it for you. I tried doing a reel myself not long ago with a couple of cans of paint, primer and clear coat. Due to my lack of experience it didn't turn out well, and the reel doesn't really fit together anymore, but a professional should get it done right. Good luck with the project mate, hope it turns out well. Keep us posted.

Thanks mate, I've sent PML an e-mail. I'll have a look for a hobby or car spray painter too. And yeah being a certate I don't want anything to go wrong so it would be ideal if the person who ends up doing the job has had past experience. I'll let everyone know if I end up finding someone and definitely show the end result.
Cheers.

you can diy quite easily, i painted this freams in a colour shift green teal purple with a 7 dollar air brush i got on ebay. Preparation is the key, the reel needs to be fully dismantled, cleaned of oil and grease then scuffed with 600 wet n dry. Water based air brush paints are awesome because you can do all they fancy stuff like they do on cars, most importantly you need to use 2 pac clear.

I would also highly suggest that the pieces that go back together like the side plate to the body be perfectly flat and without any overspray (razor blade these areas before reassembly) - as you want a 'watertight' seal. I guess finding someone with the skills to spray paint it with an air brush - I think 'Bkingaby's' got it just about right!

I would also suggest that getting onto Diawa would be a good guess, maybe they could get you a chasis under a faulty product clause or something like that???

How did u do the "colour shift green teal purple" mate?

Is it the same effect as the Daiwa Emeraldas colour, which appears to be green or purple in different angle?

You can buy it pre mixed, the brand is spazstix and you can often find it on eBay, it comes in heaps of different colours. It is highly transparent so your base coat will show through. I did my reel in black base coat then applied about seven light coats of colour shift over it or until I got the desired effect, if I had used a white or silver base coat the reel would look completely different. With an airbrush it is quite easy to direct the flow of paint so you can keep clear of the edges that join and only spray what you will see once it is re assembled. Other than that I gave it a coat of 2 PAC clear which stiches the paint to the reel and saltwater won't hurt it. Yes it sort of has the same effect as the new emeraldas but more exaggerated, my photos don't do any justice. If you want to have a crack yourself have a go at spraying some small atomics first it will help you get an idea of how much paint and distance from the job ect.

Finally sent the reel off to Dan at PML today. Total cost for dismantle, paint, reassemble and service will be $250. Chosen a light bright blue chrome colour which should stand out from the crowd a fair bit. Here are some samples of the colour. Look at the colour of the handle, spool and highlights.

Look forward to seeing the results. I was seriously considering getting my Certate painted in pearl white by PML, but it would mean that the paintjob would have cost more than the reel. By the way, the colour you chose sort of looks like a glossy version of the old certate 2500R colour, should look nice.

Yeah it can get very expensive. Now all I need is a rod to match it with.
I'm thinking an allrounder such as 2-4kg or 3-6kg, 2pc, 6"-7"6, Fuji SiC guides (hopefully the new K series), some blue winding checks/binding would be nice.
What do you guys reckon?

not sure of your price range but the new range of samurais are awesome, they have tangle free guides and the 302 (3-6kg) has a bit of blue on it which would match the blue reel pretty well.
