Light Game Fishing

The Japanese style that is. Catching rockfish (mebaru) or yakkas with 1-2inch soft plastics or metal lures.
Anyone tried this or interested in it?
I was thinking of giving it a go on some yellowtail for something different. There doesn't seem to be much interest in this style outside Japan, but I found this magazine to look at:

...we catch a heap of mackerel (mostly horse macks 25-40cm) down here around the piers at night, especially during the week for a bit of a muck around, using fairly light gear, but not too light like 'merabu' gear because of the bigger pike/couta/rare kingfish that get around. Small stickbaits and metal vibes are the better lures, just try and keep them around the edge of lights if at night.

IMO any fishing with really light gear is just... awesome. i've seen blokes catch small jewies on their 6'6" 1000 reels and it takes more skills and its a thrill to have to start the outboard just to get line back on the reel
there's a big difference between bringing in 6 pound salmon off the beach with a bream rod and a surf rod an awesome difference.

I've done it before using 3" gulp minnows, pretty fun on UL gear.

I remember pulling in a 2kg tailor using a bream rod and a 1500 shimano with 8lb braid on the surf. It was in the dark and I was using pilchards , but it was still bloody fun.

So true! I recently swapped my heavier kingfish gear (pe4-6 rod, stella 8000, pe4, 80lb leader) for some lighter gear (pe1.5-3 rod, stella 5000, pe3, 50lb leader). Since hoodlums from the rocks are more uncommon than rats/bandits I wanted more play and more hookups =]

Sweet! I would've thought 3" minnows might look too intimidating for little fish. I usually get little travelly or bigger-size fish with them. Nice work on the tailor too, that would've been a blast!
