Greg is one freak angler, Averaging over 1.3KG for each of the fish landed is something that fishing dreams are made of ![]() Matties big bream was also one tough looking brute.. I am pretty sure there may have been some serious treble damage on his favourite lure 'Reakon i may have to schedule for next year... what a place |

Two wins in a row - Albany then Marlo - awesome. Two State Titles in a row to boot - awesome. A big, and highly respected field at Marlo, one of the most anticipated rounds of the year - awesome. To crack a 3kg bag for the first time - awesome. To crack a 4kg bag - double awesome. To not only crack the magic 6kg bag, but to also be the first to crack the 7kg bag - awesome. To clear the field by over 1.1kgs - awesome. Not to crack the 8kg bag, by a mere 125gms - come on, dudes, since when was 7kgs not enough? Without doubt, I am stoked, and that will be a weekend I'll remember for a very long time indeed. I really had no idea the bream would treat me so well down there. For a couple of weeks leading up to the event, I'd been receiving plenty of doom and gloom reports of how stuffed it was going to be, what with all the flooding and debris in the water, and I really expected to go along and make up the numbers, rather than be a contender. My prefish was a very interesting one for me. I only caught one fish all day. But it was over 40 - and that was enough for me to set out the plan that I stuck to and which worked out an absolute treat, although it could have easily come all unstuck as some of the area's I prefished on the Friday with zero results, actually coughed up a massive number of fish on Day 1 - not sure what went wrong for me in those spots, but whatever it was, I couldn't turn the reel in anger. My weapon of choice was the blade, with my sneeky hooks keeping me fishing rather than pulling DohDohDohDoh off the lure every five seconds. Day 1 was awesome. My first fish was a squeaker - just over 29 to the fork, and I prepared myself for a busy and frustrating day of upgrading a 29 to a 30, and then a 30 to a 30.5, but a few minutes later, bang, and I'm looking at a 40+ in the net. Ser-weet I moved around to another spot, and on my way I managed to sink the steel into another pig of about 39 fork - "You're kidding " Ten minutes later, and there's another 40 plus getting ready for some rest and relaxation in the Hobie Floatation tank. The time is now 9:30am. Errrr.....now what? Go back, stake out the PA and head up to the pub? Or go and look for kicker upgrades? Hang on mate, you've got a tank of 40's - how are you supposed to upgrade them? Well, Marlo is Marlo - and it is well known to cough up some absolutely stupid fish - 5 and 6 pounders get caught every year, and there are plenty of stories of 7 and even 8 pounders in the past. I still had visions of JC's massive bag from last year in my mind, as well as the horse that Scotty Baker pulled, so, for once, I had a really good reason not to rest on my laurels (read - go to drink a beer in the pub ), and I continued to slog it out hoping to jag something really extra special. At about 12:50, I managed it too! From right out the front of the launch - well, upstream about 100m or so - the rod finally buckled over into the right shape and I slipped the net under another thumper. It was actually about 1cm shorter than my smallest, but man, it was a real fatso, and I made the massive call and returned the longer fish in favour of the shorter one. (I'm getting a balance now....) Checking out the other bags as they came in, and it was really interesting to see how well the 'stuffed, shut down lake' had actually been fishing. Matty's fish was off the chart in my books - one of the best looking bream I've seen, with Chris B's bag every bit as chunky as mine, and of course Jason being the only one to crack the 4kg mark for the day. I scraped a second place, just ahead of Chris, but a couple of hundred grams behind Jase, and if the place were to fish the same on Day 2 as it did on Day 1, it was going to be very difficult to make up that deficit, and I really thought that he had it in the bag.... Day 2. Geez, what a shocking start for me. A total DohDohDohDoh up with resetting the clocks for daylight saving meant that everyone was well in the distance when I finally got my sorry ass on the water, but a dangerously quick smash of a can of Mother saw me mowing down the field as I headed to my starting spot. Unlike the day before though, things were going wrong. I could not for the life of me get the hooks to set - something that I've found to be a pretty big problem with my sneeky hooks - the hook up rate is often about 1/3 of a normal set up. I kept missing fish and started to crack the DohDohDohDohs. After the fifth or sixth miss, I really lost it - "For f*ck sake!!!! How many more f*ckin fish have I got to f*ckin miss before I f*cking set the hooks in one!! AAAARRGGHH!!!" - and then I did one of those real pissed off caveman casts into nowhere in particular (that is clearly a lie ) Plop. Whack! "Yeah baby.....guess I don't have to wait that long after all!", and then I slid the net under an absolute cracker. Awesome, into the tank, and I fired off a second cast into exactly the same spot. Plop. Whack! No way - and as I got colour, I actually felt a bit of poo come out. This one was even bigger, and my god, it was a fat bastard too! Into the tank he went, and I had to really calm down a bit - I'd just landed not one, but two fish of a lifetime - on consequtive casts. Did I try for a third? Of course I did. I whipped that spot of water to an absolute foam, but it was to no avail, and as my common sense returned, I moved away and tried my luck at a couple more, which only resulted in a couple of squeakers, a thumping flattie (70 plus), and a couple of EP's up to about 45cm. An hour later, I returned to 'the spot', pretending to myself that I was just randomly coming across a likely looking spot, and that I 'may as well' chuck the lure over there just to see what happens..... Plop. Whack! Get f*cked. I was on again - from exactly the same spot as the other two, but straight away I knew that this one wasn't quite in the same league, and sure enough, it came up for air and I measured him to be around the 37-38 fork mark. It felt ridiculous being dissappointed because he wasn't a 40! Still, he was clearly over a kilo and of course a very welcome addition to the other breambo's in residence. I looked at the clock, and again it was only 9:30am. The pub crossed my mind again, but then so did my last minute upgrade from the day before, so I continued to look for a bigger fish. Today though, it didn't happen. The next few hours were torturous - how had the others gone? One by one, familiar faces returned from their chosen bream battlefields - some very upbeat, some not so. A couple of guys checked out my fish and I had conflicting responses of whether it was enough. Jason weighed first - 2.64kgs, and he was the first to shake my hand and say 'Well done mate, you've got it'. I put mine on the scales and up came the 4.045kg - 'Yeeuuuww!' And thats history now - for the time being anyway - 6/6 for 7.875kgs! A most memorable weekend for me, and one I'm not going to forget in a hurry. Great fishing, great competion, and great memories. A few have asked who will crack the 8kg mark? Well, when Jason finally puts out and we have a love child together..... Catch you at the Clarence guys. Best regards, as always, Smeg. |
