Here's a pretty good headshot on a lumix DMC-FT2, one of the waterproof/shockproof ones. Not bad cameras at all.

Go Canon.
Mine is a $89 Job and for the price, can't beat the quality. Although I did lose my first one when it fell in a half inch of water.  I know Canon do make some waterproof camera's, might be worth to have a look at.

I don't know stuff about cameras but how about Olympus U830 all weatherproof (XD card). Also great for beach, snow, behind glass and you can get an underwater housing for it. May no longer be available in Oz. If I recall it cost less than $300 though as I bought it overseas.

another vote for the lumix. As mentioned, waterproof, shock proof, takes great shots, easy to use and operate, films in HD, takes great macro shots, has a macro zoom function as well which actually works.
