Canon G12

Hi people,

Looking for a camera to snap all my fishing exploits, and i sort of like the canon G12, however id like some opinions first, before i go out and buy it. It seems a bit expensive for a digital, maybe i should just go for a dslr?

Hi danz,

The G12 is fairly new and only hit the market in October 2010. You may not get many responses on the camera's performance as yet.

Check the links below and see if this camera will suit your intended use. For taking snaps during fishing trips you can get away with something a bit more compact, lighter and cheaper.

G12 is a high end, so called "prosumer" camera, that requires some experience and knowledge of digital photography in order to use this camera to its full potential. It's not your ordinary "point and shoot" camera (P&S).

As for your statement, quote:
It seems a bit expensive for a digital,
unquote,

aren't they all digital, including dslr?

As I said, this is high end camera and the price reflects that.

Good luck,

I was also looking at a point and shoot cameras for the missus as she thinks the the nikon d90 dslr that I bought her for her birthday is too complicated to use. (my work colleagues remind me of a simpsons episode of homer buying marge a bowling ball).

Anyway for point and shoot style cameras, I was looking a the following:

Canon A3300 IS. It's not too expensive either with an rrp of $179 USD. However, it's was only released this month and probably won't make it to our shores for a while yet.

The other point and shoot style camera is the Panasonic Lumix TZ10 Pal version.

the s95 seems the one to go for, since its got basically the same "guts" as the G12, yet its more compact - meaning easier to store on a fishing trip

I have owned a G9 for a few years now, and love it. Picture quality is excellent, full control over camera, and its tough as. I have travelled extensively with it in my pocket, and bashed it around in some pretty crazy climate (try -43 ).

I will be upgrading to a G12 as soon as finances allow.

Having compared the G12 and the s95, I would go the G12 any day, if only for the more rugged chassis and the fact that it fits my hands much better (it doesn't feel like a dinky toy like the s95).

seriously, its a big put off to have the s95 feel like a toy. Just compare the two side by side, you will agree i am sure.

if you don't mind a slightly more bulky P&S camera, you will be rewarded with excellent pics, solid camera, and full control over your pcture taking.

I have a G12 and love it for fishing/bushwalking photography, it is a robust camera, it is adaptable from fully auto to fully manual, picture quality is good for the level of stuff I do but can shoot in RAW if you are after publishable pics. It has some funky little features also that are uselful (such as the fisheye feature shown below). Lens seems good across the range and it is perfect for low light shooting (often the case with my fishing) I landed mine for about $550 (internet deal), I have since got screen protectors, spare battery and a cases (soft and a Pelican) very cheap on evilbay from Hong Kong. Here are a few pics from my last outing.

G12 wins hands down in point and shoot.
Wanting to buy one for the times my 5DMKII kit is just to big to take. Specially the trips where weight restrictions are and issue.
Had a G9 and spewing I sold it!
I had the waterproof case also a wide angle lens so I could photograph big fish in little boats. It was just brilliant!

IN the point and shoot cameras, bigger the lens usually better the picture.

i can totally agree with the above statement^^

as a long time nikon fan, shooting full frame dslr's, i have used a fair few point and shoot cameras and canon's G series takes the cake out of any P+S i have ever used.

anything from G9 to the newest model will be more than enough camera for someone wanting a very capable 'starters' camera. they are excellent bits of kit.

so much so that i now own a g10 as backup and 'simple camera' for my (im a newly converted) 5d mk11.

G10 is my favourite of the lot.

The Powershot G series can accept a number of photographic accessories. Filters and other threaded lens accessories can be used with an adapter tube. Adapter tubes are available from Canon or third party suppliers. Most adapter tubes have 58 mm filter threads. In addition to standard filters and close-up lenses, the adapter tube can be used to attach wide angle or telephoto converter lenses to the Powershot G series. Starting with at least the G9 model, there is a bayonet mount on the front of the camera around the lens to directly attach lenses and accessories.
