Fishing Holiday Options?
Hey there, am starting to think about a possible holiday, this time next year, after university is done for the year.
Have weighed up the options of visiting family/friends in Canada on a budget (i.e., just paying for plane tickets, bludging for food/accomodation), and a couple of Asian backpacking holidays. But I've also started considering some fishing options. What are some good (and cheap) fishing holidays? I'd love to go up north and try for Barra et al, but I fear that accomodation and guiding, boats etc would get very expensive? Are there any barra-fishing options that are cheaper? How about any other suggestions? A mate and I are going to Lord Howe Island in a couple of months for ten days, which should be good. Any other options? Any advice would be great. -Good fishing -Cheapish -Good times for all -No partner, no kids, no boat. Thanks all.

You could get across to NZ relatively cheaply I imagine. For some guaranteed fish however I'd be more inclined to head to a tropical spot. There are plenty of spots all over the WA coast that don't necessitate guides or expensive accomodation. Everything from Exmouth upwards tends to be pretty cheap.
SE Asia is an option - definately cheap, but it sucks if you're just on a short holiday wanting to enjoy yourself and you're always watching over your shoulder because you're kinda in the middle of nowhere and it all seems a bit sus... I'd say Canada or NZ are the conservative options, Asia and even Africa (under-rated fishing!) are the out-there options, and northern aus is somewhere in the middle. cheers

Heading up to the Kimberleys is a good option as well. Great Caravan park at Kununurra and the exploring the Ord and through over the border to the Keep River.
Add a quick jaunt over to El Questro Station to wine and dine the lady at Emma Gorge and you have one of the best trips you could imagine. I lived it for 2 and a half years. Wicked country.

Yeah, it's great up here, but sometimes you just yearn for a change of scene, and of species ![]() -CR |

Bear, it does indeed sound like quite a life. It would take a long time to get over there... flying isn't all that cheap, and I wouldn't want to have to rent a car to get around, and driving over would be a bit of an ordeal, I suppose. I might leave the west coast until I've got the money to do it right, and then, oh boy, will I do it right.
Actually, I'd really like to have the money to do a lot of things, buy a boat, travel more, buy new rods.. but for the next few years I'm afraid I'm going to stay a poor student... Actually, I've had a new idea. My dad has always said he'd love to fish for barramundi, if I con him into coming (i.e., paying), I'm sure I could organise something special ![]() Thanks everyone, this has got the cogs in the old melon ticking over..
