SPs for Bream
Hi, I fish Port hacking river landbased and have found it quite tough hooking any bream on SPs. I'm not sure if its my technique or just that i'm not striking when theyre hitting.
I have been told it is one of the harder rivers to target bream on SPs. I'm using 4lb fireline and 4lb black magic fluro leader, usually 1/32-1/16 jigheads and a range of gulp and squidgy SPs. Could someone enlighten me on what I'm meant to look out for to detect the bites or hits and when to strike? Thanks |

Hi mate, I've only fished the hacking a handful of times and yep it can be a pretty tough place espeically land based but they are in there and the bonus is that the by catch is sometimes pretty special, its not unusual to see big salmon and kings up the back of the system.
Sounds like your 4lb leader is light enough but maybe try a longer length (up to 2 rod lengths) to decrease the chance of fish spooking. As for detecting bites, you will either see it or feel it down the line. You will get used to how the line looks when it sinks or how it lays when you are pausing the plastic. If you see anything that you think is different to that then strike. If you feel any tic down the line strike, some times the bite is subtle, sometimes it gets whacked. In summary, when in doubt strike! |
