The 'Death' of the old faithful Baitcaster...

Last Friday,i decided to use my Baitcaster Outfit..namely a Shimano Coriolis and Custom Jap Blank rod by Tweed Tackle.

Beautiful reel for the $$$..check out my Blog for a Field Test, warning it does contain photos of "The Chopping Board of Death"...

http://tackletester.blogspot.com/

I havent used the outfit for donkeys yonks.

I remember back in the day ( i am 38 ) baitcasters were all the rage, with ABU perhaps being Numero Uno...

Spinning Reels were for novist, and Daiwa and Shimano Spinning Reels were of good quality, but NOTHING like the designs of the day.

Damn,u can spend so much $$$ on Spinning Reels now....is the Baitcaster been thrown into obscurity ?

I actually had a Daiwa Millionaire and a Shimano Bantam Mag ( swapped 'em for a SKS Assault Rifle !!! ) on an Ugly Stick...wow...remember them ??

When i took the Baitcaster Outfit down to Tullebudgera,i was so surprised how much fun it really is to use one...

But the drawbacks were to much.

I couldnt cast anything less than 10g for a decent distance.

The odd backlash.

But gee it was comfortable, one hand all the way ().

Is the art of overheads finished ?

If you look at most of the photos on this site and numerous others, the advantage of a Spinning Reel is just to great.

Other than Lure Casting for Precision Throws, its popularity is definately decreasing.

I know there are quite a few who still use them religously, but unless you have to cast within 1 foot....whats the point ?

I can cast Hell Accurately with my Spinning Reel,so why arent Anglers so devoted to the Baitcaster in comparo to previous years.

Marketing ?

Pro Videos ?

Government Conspiracy ?

No way, in the US all the bass fishos use baitcasters, hardly ever see them use spinning reels. Most bream fishermen use spinning reels because bream lures are too light for most baitcasters to cast. I love using baitcasters, they are very fun to use and you can palm the reel, feels comfortable when working lures. Spin reels are easier to use though, so I wouldn't be surprised if the popularity of baitcasting reels decreases one day.

I still have ABU's that are 10+ years and I remember my first ever overhead, a Millionaire 6H and UglyStick with interchangeable handle (pistol and double overhead pistol)... werent they the clappers... I remember I found it a few weeks prior to xmas so I loaded it up with 50m of 12lb I had lying around... then I used to cast it during the day while I was on holidays and my sister was out @ the beach n stuff... I'd be casting away with bomb leads in the backyard... till one day I got sprung by my mum and it was only a couple of days prior to xmas... well I still got them both, lol t'was lurve sweet lurve back then.

I dont often get my overheads out 'cept for the occasional charter... I got one this month off Kiama so amped for that only a coupla weeks to go, lol

Tight lines

Thats in the US...but yeah...great point...the Yanks do use them as a main tool...but i would say that its the same over there as it is here...the Spinning Reels are very popular.I dare say Number One.

But what about Soft Plasics with a 1/4 OZ Jig Head, keeping in mind that 7.15grams.....It would be okay....but u really need 10 grams to get it out a decent distance.

Thanks,great point.

The coriolis is a entry level reel. It doesn't have super free or a light spool which is essential when casting light lures. Most mid-ranges and high end bc reels in 100-200 size wouldn't have a problem casting a 1/4oz jighead plus a plastic.

I'll use my BC (Pflueger Patriarch + Mojiko Tournament) when throwing 10g or more.

I fish for Wild Barra a few times a year, and the baitcasters still reign supreme and whilst on the subject a calcutta 100 DC (or in my case 101DC) is unbeatable...

I go Barra Fishing regularly, and yes,i would have to say 75% would use a Baitcaster.

But then again, heavy Lures and SP's are used.

If it was light finese fishing using light weight gear, for Trout and Bream, the main reel used is definately a Spinning Reel.

Thanks Shauno,good point.

I have used high-end baitcasters with light lures, and there really isnt much difference.....

But yeah, quality and design would play a vital role.

Thanks.

My Patriarch can throw 1/4 ounce + plastic no worries. Can give it a really hefty flick.

Once I try below 7 grams though, I have to be more careful to avoid backlash.

So obviously quality design makes a huge difference.

Seems that the feedback from most is that the higher quality BC's are more than up to the challenge of throwing lighter weights.

Thanks.

Used to have a Shimano Bantam BKM 200FS and a Shimano Super Speed Master Ultra Light Special, 2 absolutely great years only sold them about 18 months ago as no one would service them, even Shimano sent them back not wanting to touch them. Since then i have vowed not to spend that much on reels again
A quality baitcaster is a wonderful thing

So i suppose at the end of the day,you mainly use a Spinning Reel ?

Thats a shame Shimano would not come to the party....a simple service would have made them as new.

You can still cast tiny lures to a decent distance with the right gears and techniques........check it.

For me, fishing is just for fun and very personal. You dont always need to follow the trend to catch a fish or enjoy youself. I enjoy using my spinning reels, as well as my baitcast reels. Dont think too much and make it complicated mate. Cheers.
