Is it showing symptoms of something wrong or is this just a general service?

It's not hard to do, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're mechanically challenged (take something apart and don't know how it goes back together).

A good rule is while dismantling the reel, lay the parts out in the order of which you took them off.

Check the bearings and washers, oil them if need be.

Clean all existing grease off the gears and apply new grease (I just use car bearing grease).

Then reassemble.
