Does spool diameter affect casting distance and wind knots?
All other things being equal, does casting distance increase with spool diameter (at the lip)?
Also, does the spool diameter affect the rate of wind knots? I have heard that a larger diameter means more length per "coil" which equates to more distance. However I would imagine that it takes more energy to take a coil from a bigger spool. Also as the coils are larger, when they leave the spool they would foul more readily with the guides causing more wind knots. I'll admit this is mostly all theory for me which means crap in the real world. What are your experiences? Last edited by kemo sabe; 22-07-2010 at 07:53 AM. |

It take no more effort to pull the line from a larger spool...
Wind nots are mostly caused by coils getting sucked off the spool during the cast.... this happens because some peoples jigging styles cause line to lay loose on the spool.... the vacume from line ripping from a spool is much more than you would expect and these loose coils get sucked off prematurely..... now....if you sit a plastic ring over the neck of a coke bottle it will lift up very easy.... but push down and it locks tight to the bottle neck....this is why daiwas do not suffer tangles anything like other reels... and some daiwas never tangle...daiwa reels lay the line so that it builds up more at the top of the spool.... this means that any loose coils get tighter if they get sucked up during a cast... tighter coils cannot therefore be sucked right off and cause a tangle ...but this was not why daiwa designed the reels this way... it was because the taper would throw the line out before it pulled forward towards the spool lip... it would the pass the lip without touching the lip and thereby cause less friction resulting in longer casts.... SO....i was never a daiwa fan other than when i was much younger...but since i bought some of the older luvias's im very happy.... i get no tangles...i still have shimano's but i load the line so the spool is slighty top heavy and the tangles have gone down by 75 %.... i also run out some line without a lure attached behind the boat or in the park then point the rod straight back at the line and wind it back on between my fingers to get all twists out... Note....the 2500 shimanos are mostly trouble free as the larger spool means the line leaves the spool at a slower speed.... The thinner the line the less tangles as thinner line winds onto the spool tighter... This is only my opinion so dont shoot me down if you disagree....but i have solved others tangles this way so if it helps you then good stuff.... if it dont help then...mmmmm...my mum pinched my login and wrote this...

Thanks Bender. You speak much wisdom.
I thought the ultimate goal for line lay was straight up and down, not tapered/funnelled. Perhaps I don't quite understand the physics but I thought if the line was top heavy then throwing loose coils from the very top of the taper would be easier causing more knots. Nothing speaks more than experience though so I might try and do as you do and see what happens. You do this by removing washers right? You say the thinner the line the less tangles - isn't this contradictory to the general consensus? ie. lighter line = more wind knots. |

... and does that mean you don't agree that a larger diameter spool casts further?
Sorry to ask so many questions. |

Ask as many questions as you like...this is what a forum is for...the only dumb question is the one you dont ask...
![]() lighter line causes less tangles as it winds tighter to the spool....when i throw surface poppers i use a high speed shimano so that the line winds tight to the spool to avoid casting tangles... and larger diameter spools do cast further but the comparison must be made using the same rod and the same line... And remember that thinner line casts further than thicker line....
