anywhere from half a rod length to a rod length I find to be most effective. but on clear days and really clear water you may want to go as long as 2 rod lengths.
but as a general rule 1-2 to a full rodlength you should be pretty right

Your leader length also depends on where you are fishing. For example, on sand flats you might want one about 2 and a half to three especially when the water is clear and its sunny, but as a general rule, about 1 to 1 and a half should do fine.

ok thanks, would that length in general cut back on casting distance? seeing it's a lot less limp than braided line moving around the guides?

I don't think your casting distance will be cut short by much regardless. Just make sure your leader knot is spot on if you go for over a rod length of leader as the knot will be wound into the spool and can cause no end of grief with wind knots.
