just wondering if sics are worth $20 more per rod than recoils

The new Loomis rods about to come out have sics on the bottom half and Recs on the top half. The idea is that weight is removed of the tip area to increase sensitivity and increase casting distance.

Also look out for the new 'Microwave' guide system coming out.

I only use Recs on Fly rods, dont like them on spinning or casting rods but that is my personal preference.

Yep SiCs for spinning and casting rods and recs for fly rods.

There are some pretty light weight SiC guides out now. I wouldn't think it would make a hell of a difference in weight in the 6,7,8mm guides with titanium frames.

Yes recoils are hopeless with PE line IMO "tangles tangles tangles"

I agree, sic with titanium frames are the way to go,almost unbreakable and they do not rust even in salt water,a bit dearer yes,but they last sooo much longer, most of my rods now have them.[i build my own]

I dont mind the recs. They feel awesome. Almost like a bare blank. I used to have issues with tangles with a rod with all rec guides and a rec tip. Now have a rod with all recs and a sic tip guide and i have not had a single issue.

I tend to use a titanium framed stripper guide (not SIC) and a Sic tip for my light rods and then use recs for the rest. The small rec guides are approximately half the weight of the TI sic's. I found a site that had weights for lots of the different components

Other rec advantages IMO are they are a titanium wire so they don't rust (same as the TiSIC') and they spring back into shape and you can't pop the SIC ring out.

I don't think they are as smooth as the SIC or other ceramic guides (so presumably generate more friction), but they definitely add life to the very light blanks. For say 4kg plus rods I use all TiCeramic guides. The smoother ceramic ring would cut down on friction which I think is a bigger problem when there is heavier drag setting and a thicker braid.

Rec have a new ion coated guide (Black pearl I think) which is interesting. I think I will order a set of these for another rod I'm building. They might be a bit smoother than the standard rec.

Out of interest what do you have against two piece?? Is transporting an issue?

What's with all of the problems with wind knots using PE in Recoil guides......I think I had maybe 8 or 10 back when I first got a rod with them and since have never had them.
I must be just lucky, or know how to cast a rod properly

Cheers.

I had to go find it again as it is on the favourites of my old computer. For any rodbuilders out there there is an absolute mountain of information on the rodbuilding.org site. Thats where I found the components weight site.

Spot on Growse - there is no such thing as "wind knots", only "casting knots". If you're getting knots when casting it is probably because you are forcing the rod too hard for what it can achieve when casting. And the "faster" action rods only make this worse. (speaking from experience ) By casting within the rod action we get a more efficient cast, use less energy, reduce the risk of damage to the rod and reduce the risk of tangles or snapping the line.
There's also the issue of slack-line wraps around your guides when fishing SPs really slow with heaps of pauses. This usually happens if there is wind or we wave our rods around a little bit. This happens more easily with PE lines as they are softer than fused lines, which tend to be stiffer.
If you are having trouble with knots around your guides, and don't want to try a more appropriate casting stroke for the rod you are using, then try looking at the new Fuji K series - part of their design is to be wider at the base so that any wraps just fall off and don't catch and tangle.
To get back to the original question. Is it worth the extra money to spend in Sics than RECS? The real answer is: only if YOU think it is. Very much a personal choice.
I like RECS, don't have any trouble since I learnt how to cast within the rod action - and I like the noise they make when you get a good fish and the line screams off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
