i use black magic fluro leader in 4 & 6lb. its reasonable thin and they break a bit over their rating. i did use nitlon leader in 3lb and tthats really thin but does break right on 3lb so theres no room for error.

Currently I'm using 4lb Nitlon and really liking it. It's quite a soft line with low memory. If I need to go heavier, I'll use 6lb Sunline Rockfish. This is more rigid but also seems more abrasion resistant. Both are about $20 for 100m.

You can also use Berkley Vanish as a leader which is much cheaper (~$15 for 300m?). I have used 4lb and it seemed OK. I'm not exactly sure what the difference is but I'd stick to dedicated leader flourocarbon.

Nic,

I have tried a few Fluorocarbon leaders over the years now,but I just use Berkley Vanish,in various weights depending on which species of fish I'm chasing in size. And apart from that the price is great & it has not caused me any problems in light,or heavier fishing.I always keep approximately four different weight combinations,so I'm prepared for most conditions.
I fully trust it!

Gae.

I use Berkley Vanish in 6lb too.

I am also interested to know the difference between "normal" fluorocarbon and the stuff that is branded specificaaly as leader material.

leader materiel has generally got more abrasion resistance than fluorocarbon main lines and and is a little stiffer because of it...

You can get this is lesser breaking strains (i have it in 2lb) but it is very good in 6lb.

I have been using vhard fluoro now for the last month or so and it have been exceptional in the abrasion resistance. as the name suggests it has a very hard coating which has been wrapped around pylons on nice fish and held up exceptionally.

Also comes in non-standard breaking strains. I use 7lb and 5 lb in it.

Berkley Vanish for me, 8lb and 14lb are the lines i probably go through most. I just like the way the line acts, especially for dog walkers. 8lb does give me some grief with my knots, but im 99.999% sure its my technique haha

Me too. Berkley makes stuff cheap but you get bad batches in them and you never know what you're gonna get. You get bad batches of fluorocarbon as well as their firelines. The good batches are really good. I still have 6lb fireline on one reel which has been there for 5 years and still going strong but I've seen others fail almost new off the spool. The failure usually occurs when tying the braid to the leader and the braid just snaps like thread when the knot is tightened. Same for fluoro. Paying extra money to have peace of mind when possibly hooking into a PB fish is well worth it. Moreso in tournament situations.
