hey jake go for a shimano core or chronarch. core is about $550 and chronarch about $480. core is a bit more money but you'll feel the difference. if your really crazy get a calais DC, ONLY $950.

Extra $50 and get a Alphas 103R $499 at DohDohDohDohDohDohDohDoh but probably could get it cheaper elsewhere

He asked for a slow retrieve reel. Calais 200DC is a 7.0:1. he also asked for a reel around the $350-$400 mark.

The Chronarch D5 would do it nicely, but thats $479 from DohDohDohDohDohDohDohDoh. Or you can go for the Curado E5, great value for money reel.
Zillion Crazy Cranker is another option, but thats a bit over your budget aswell.
The Daiwa Alphas is an awesome reel for bass, can cast even light bream lures. The retrieve speed is 5.8:1, good all-rounder reel.

If you are a fan of the round style baitcasters,
Calcutta TE GT or a Conquest would also be awesome, again over the $400 dollar mark.
Daiwa's CV-Z I believe is out of production, but it's a nice reel.

My advice, if you are sticking to your budget of $350-$400, you can try and get a used reel, you could maybe even pick up a Calcutta TE 100DC. Or you can buy from overseas. If you are willing to buy from overseas, look at the Shimano Scorpion 1000XT, fantastic little reel that can cast your little bass lures, great performance, and if you buy overseas, you can get it for under your budget. Infact PLAT have them for 17500YEN at the moment, but only in the right hand model.
Whatever you choose to do, good luck with choosing your reel.

Cheers,

Hey mate my suggestion would be to look oversea's, the Daiwa Zillion Crazy cranker is going out for $269.95 including postage.
I provided a link, feel free to look around as there are alot more reels that you may be interested in at a decent price.

I would stay away from a Calais DC, regardless of how big your budget is.

Alphas R Edition all the way man, really kicking myself for letting mine go. The D5 Chronarch would also be up there for me, ive used a few of them and they seem to stay buttery smooth, cast a mile, and, if you decide to spool it up for a northern barra trip, or want to go chase a jack or 2, you will have no problems putting 20-30lb line on it.

And to those young fellas,
Its not about the gear you have, its about how you use it

I would disagree, the Calais DC is a fantastic reel. I have a Alphas 103L with a spool from the Alphas ITO. When it comes to anything larger than about 10g, the Calais DC outcasts the Alphas with ease. The Calais is also very smooth, as is the drag. The Alphas drag is quite sticky at high settings, and the reel doesn't feel as refined as the Calais, no clicking drag star or spool tension. Besides the Calais being a bit heavy, it is an awesome reel. The alphas is a great reel, but not in the same league as the Calais. However, if you want to use the reel for bass, I would recommend the Alphas as it can cast those light bass lures very well, it can even cast little bream hb and sp's. A very versatile reel, good value for money aswell. But as i said before, the new scorpion XT 1000/1001 would be the pick.

Cheers,

Not Disputing the reels awsomeness, just think there are better value for money reels available. The internals of the Calais DC are near identical to a Curado 200, only major difference i could find between the 2 reels was infact the digital control, BUT i have never used one, and only based my opinions according to here say. I know i would prefer a Calias though, very nice looking reels. I have delt with 2 at work so far, the internals were corroded into one solid mass. BUT that was opperater error (no maintainence after multiple saltwater trips), people who live in a throw away society, and obviously have too much money for their own good.

ANYWAY, for that sort of money, im sure you will have a nice reel,
Cheers

Consider the Curado E5, great reel for the money. Don't get a pixy unless you really are using it for finesse applications. The spool capacity is very low, the drag is rubbish and its not SW friendly. The Crazy Cranker and the Chronarch D5 are great reels, between them I'd go for the Chronarch. Good luck with choosing your reel.

zillion all the way.as for tossing lighter lures, upgrade the bearings to abec 5 or 7 with lighter oil and carbontex washer as well if you wishes for smoother drag.
