Hey guys,
Ive just bought a Luvias DA from Tackleware House in Brisbane QLD about 1-2 weeks ago. I love the reel its awesome and I don't regret spending the 400bucks though after buying it and I was at home playing around with it, I listened carefully and I could kinda hear the mechanic's inside ( the gears moving ) while I reel, since I just bought it I thought it was probably the oil in the reel that needs to get settled in or something. I've used it twice now and I've cleaned it well since it was my new baby but I believe the noise is getting a bit worse :S what do? what could it be? help? Thanks, Qbkami |

all new reels should get serviced after the first couple of sessions, its like a new car service. also you will find that daiwa/shimano etc. cant pump a reel full of grease incase it sits on a shelf for months on end, they are usually quite dry, get it serviced and pumped full of grease and it will then feel the way a brand new reel should

Mate,
Take it back into Tackle Warehouse and get them to take a look at it. They may be able to check it over in the shop and lube it up for you. Ask to check it against another brand new luvias and if there is any noticable difference ask them to either fix it or swap it for another reel. I had a Sustain once that was the same, rougher than the other two in the shop so got it changed no questions asked. I beleive it may have had a dodgy bearing in it or another manufacturing fault. I have also had brand new Shimano's and Daiwa's that have had little or no lube in them, or lube in the wrong place. Good luck with it. Regards, Dave |

apparently its quite common in the luvias especially the one before the DA.i had a couple of them doing the same thing .............seems to be a bit rough which is not as smooth as the real 4 reels should be.

Firstly - you dont pump ANY reel full of grease...most reels have a tiny bit of water impervious grease...likely teflon and the majority of moving parts are oiled using a good quality thin grade oil...too much of the wrong grease makes your reel hard to wind which is bad for fast line recovery when using plastics. Now - if your reel is grinding on the gears its almost likely that its over OR under shimmed..... Meaning - there are super thin copper washers between the side bearings and the sideplate OR side bearings and main gear.... These shims are mostly 0.1 to 0.5 of a mm...... If you hold your reel in one hand and wind with the other while pulling the handle as if your trying to remove it completely from the reel the sound may get worse or better...mostly it should get worse....also if you wind you can push the handle towards the reel and this is effectivly pushing the main gear away from the pinion gear on a right handled reel and this usually makes it quieter , meaning you have a reel that needs to be re-shimmed...Meaning - have one taken away or added or a thinner or thicker one added..... When you buy a reel you should expect to have a tiny -really tiny amount of play when you try and push the handle in and out of the reel body...top shelf reels are very tight but only to a point.....they have exact specs that they are shimmed to and you dont mess with them... I just did Gav Naglins fuego but i would not mess with anything higher shelf....leave it to the brand name experts to service it or go claim your entitled warranty....

sigh...
I just recently gave it to Tackle Warehouse and not mentioning any names the guy took my reel told me that there was nothing wrong with it after winding it a hand full of times... I knew that the winding was smooth as a babies bottom already and there was nothing wrong with the winding, I made it clear that it was the sound from inside that was my concern though he listened to it and said that he didn't hear a thing, just only what all the other reels do though I knew myself that there was a sound that wasn't to my liking... maybe it was all the ambient sounds that distorted his hearing or it was just me hearing things... in saying that before giving it into for warranty repair, I let a couple of my friends hear the reel and they hear the same thing as I do. Anyway the guy told me that I shouldn't really bother sending it in and that they will just send it back, (in my head) *come on man, I just bought my first semi high end reel and if i think there is a problem with it then I would send it in no hesitations, its free so it wouldn't hurt anyway.
* I asked him to send it to Daiwa for me... sent it in on a late Monday arvo and received a call on Wednesday arvo to pick it up. I don't know about you but I thought servicing/checking a reel would be a few more days at least... They gave me it back and told me there is nothing wrong with it, oh well it just thinking, was even serviced by a Daiwa specialist? I came back home listening to the same sound, I asked Dad what he thought of it and he told me that it needs Lub inside... exactly what was on my mind... I dont know what to do now since it apparently gone to a Daiwa specialist and hes given it back so... any ideas guys? The only thing im thinking of is to send it into multiple Daiwa specialist myself.

They do have a scuffing noise which comes from under the rotor assembly and this is caused by a washer on top of the anti reverse pin roller bearing...its a common noise on lots of reels....
other noise comes from the main pinion gear spinning on the main spool shaft...some very light oil on the shaft under the spool fixes this......also the line rollers make noise so you have to oil your line roller.... does the reel make noise when your winding line or just turning it without it on the rod...

most reels i hear are not completely silent.......they make whirring sounds and light scuffing sounds but when you are out in the field you dont hear them....sometimes people are over expectant of their gear although you may be right....im sure you hear something and you can record it on your mobile and send it to my mobile if you like....i had a couple of people do that....im not a reel shop or anything like that but at 46 years old and from a engineering background i have serviced and repaired loads of reels plus bought reels cheap from shops that could not fix them....i got them working fine....

Go to the store and try a couple of other Luvias of the same size and see if they make the same noise.
If they don't, insist on sending your reel to Daiwa but don't forget to enclose a brief description of the problem. Otherwise, ask the store for replacement. Not good enough
