Lures for smaller bream?

Hey everyone.
As some of you may know, I have been trying to catch bream on lures for a fair while now, so far I have caught three, and it doesn't seem to get any easier. I have almost completely reverted back to bait due to the frustration of spending a whole day on the water and not getting a touch. So i was thinking about why this might be the case, and I thought about the average size of the bream in my stretch of the river, as it turns out, the bream up my way aren't really that huge, anything over about 25cm is cause for excitement, and I can't remember the last time I saw a bream over 30cm. when I compared this to the massive bream I see on BM, I wondered whether maybe the reason I am not catching many fish, is because Smaller bream aren't so big on lures. Is that true? are there smaller/different lures that are more effective on smaller bream? any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.

mate just get some berkly gulp shrimp in pepper prawn or malting colour. light jighead. let them hit the bottom and just work them realllly slowly. slow lift and drop. stick on a stinger hook to pick up the tail strikes. u should be right. ive caught bream almost the size of the lure doing this. best of luck.

As the saying goes " big bait catches big fish, small bait catches all fish".

I beleive that a 25cm bream WILL go for a topwater sammy, or even a deep diving Jackall squirrel. But, may hesitate to strike. Yet a small lure may make even smaller, yet bigger fish into having a crack.
So, in saying that.
I think just sticking with a few SX40's, pygmy's etc should do the trick in your area.
well I hope this helps.

Hmmm, I have some of those gulp prawns, but I can never work out how to rig them, they just spin in the water and never look good, any tips?

when you rig them, do you rig them so the back of the lure is straight. Or is there a upwards bend on the back of the lure?
That happens to me when The lure is rigged on wrong.
it should swim just straight.

I find if they are bent and look rubbish, just bite the tail off and rig them backwards or just rig them so that they are 90 deg to the hook...its fool proof that way. The stinger system works, but is fiddly to set up properly.

Try slow rollow a shallow chubby or a khamsin shallow model, i've been scoring plenty of rats Having to sort through the rats to find a legal model.

Surface lures are good, but little bream will hit them just as much as larger bream...they normally kiss and slap around the lure, where as the bigger models just seem to smash it (sometimes.............)

If your a beginner keep it simple.

Dont worry about topwaters, blades, finesse plastics etc as these methods require you to have confidence in lure use to begin with.

My advice; get a lure suitable to your water depth in a natural colour and use the slow roll technique.

ie; a shallow tiny khamsin or chubby minnow if less than 1m, or an sx40 or normal chubby is 1m plus. cast her out and just use a constant slow retrieve. This WILL catch fish if they're there. Hopefully this can then build confidence for you to try other techniques that may be more productive.

aaaaahh, so just cut the tail off and rig em backwards, that makes sense, thanks. I have tried khamsins and a few other well known bream lures, but not much luck yet as I say, I would like to catch bream off the surface, I have thrown one of those px45's around a fair bit, but again no luck.
Thanks.

ok, so Station, the water I fish is only quite shallow, u reckon just slow roll some sx40's through it. sounds easy enough, now I just gotta get the lures and give it a go.

Thats what i would do mate. It wont catch every fish that looks/follows, but it will get a few and hopefully give you more confidence. As i said before dont start with the more complicated techniques, build confiodence in the lures first.

I'm new to lure fishing also (started a couple months back), I've found youtube to be an good guide but it's only a guide.

What I'm slowly learning is how to adjust to different situations eg high tide mid day, dead low tide early morning, windy, overcast ect ect

I use to bait up cast and crack a can. (no thinking involved)

Now when I go fishing I go to war lol constantly changing lures, leaders, location retrives to find out what works.

You say you've had a few sessions where you got nothing, me too but I take that as a positive.

Learning what doesn't work is just as important IMO.

Stewart.
