Help with lure weight guides!

Hey guys,

With rods that state that the rod is rated to lures between 1/32nd-1/4 oz, or like 1-7 grams, I understand that that is the optimun casting weights for that specific rod, however, if I was to go over the weight, what problems will it pose?

I have heard that it can snap the tips, and seeing as graphite can be very sensitive, I am not doubting this. However I use alot of my bream gear for squidding, chucking around 10-15gram jigs and havent had a single issue.

I was wondering if this is doing damage to the rod, or if it can pose a considerable problem in the future?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks guys,

George

well as we all know graphite rods eventually get sloppy? some quicker than others. I think if you were to use lures heavier than the rod recomends, it speeds up the prosses.
hope this helps
cheers

I didnt realise graphite rods get sloppy? I have a nitro thats over 2 years old and its remained brilliant?

Even a pretty ordinary shimano rod I have has stayed in great condition, even though I abuse it a fair bit.

Thanks anyway mate

In my experience you can go slightly above the optimum casting weight for a rod by using a sweeping cast as opposed to a flick to get the lure out. It puts less violent pressure on the rod. 10 gram jigs should be alright but try a sweep cast for anything over 10 grams just to be safe.

hey mate,

Yep definitely do sweep casts, Id be asking for trouble if I tried short flicking big 15 gram squid jigs around!

Ill just take it easy and Im sure it will be fine, just wanted to make sure though.

Thanks
