Angry Jerky Luvias

Just received a brand new luvias, to stamp on my excitement the drag is jerky as DohDohDohDoh!!!!!!! but wacked my kix spool on it and it's smooth, so I guess it's the luvias spool that is the problem, any advice to help fix it would be very appreciated.

To say I'm pissed off would be an understatement. Never buying OS again.

Michael.

Just chuck some new washers in it, doubt that the spool has been warped.

I've seen a few luvias' now that have a sticky drag under light load. Replace drag washers, then if your feeling a bit naughty chuck a bearing under the spool and it will be sweet.

Out of intrest, is it used or new?

Is the luvias knob sitting level when screwed down?

I guess the thread could be tapped crooked?

I think you may be right Matt it doesn't appear to be level. What can I do about it?

I'd check what the other drag sits like - if it, too, is crooked, then the shaft may be threaded incorrectly. If it sits straight, then the Luvias drag may be tapped incorrectly, or damaged.

Pity, I'm loving the Luvias 1003 that I bought from TroutBum a couple of months back - it is a great reel and the drag works very smoothly on it.

Hope you get it sorted.

cheers

Reel

Minnow,

Drop Bass.jp a email and advise of the problem, I'm pretty sure there is still warranty. You would just need to send it back to Japan.

By the sounds of it the knob is threaded and going on crooked, should hopefully be a simple fix.

Regards,

If the kix knob is sitting crooked too then it wouldnt make sense that the drag is smooth then. I'm guessing warped/bent spool or something in that case, which is fairly unlikely.

If the male end of the thread is tapped crooked (i.e one side has bitten deeper than the other) then it would also mean that the drag smoothness will be dodgey irrespective of the knob on there.

Which makes me think that the thread has been tapped wrong on the knob. Then again you have just provided a photo with the kix knob crooked as well.

Got me stumped.

Either way daiwa pricing for parts for repairs etc are nuts. Postage to japan is probably not that much more and fingers crossed you have a fresh one then.

if there is not a lot of pressure the spring inside the knob sits on its edge and the knob will sit at a angle.

this should go as you apply pressure by tightening the knob.

is there any drag grease on the drag washers it may have been forgotten about in being built in factory.

also there could be a cupped or bent drag washer in the stack which may need jerkyness to the drag
the washer may need lapping.

i always lap my washers

Michael,
Let me know when you are in the area next, and you try the luvias drag from mine.
What size did you end up getting.?
Let me know.
Cheers Dale.

Thanks dale, I got the 2000, trying to get in contact with bass.jp to see about a replacement or refund because there is definitely something wrong (faulty) with the drag system, if you pull line from it, it feels like the drag pressure is constantly changing in violent jerks, it's horrible

but hopefully all works out though

Michael.
