Bream Rod??

G'day Everyone..

Im just starting out and looking for a bream/flats rod for under $200.. Looking to get into throwing around some light lures on 4lb gear.. Would prefer something at least 7' long, maybe 7'6..

Any suggestions would be great

Cheers

shimano starlo stix pro - 7'3" 2-4kg. u can pick them up for $130 - $150
top rod and nice and long to for punching out long casts, i love mine.

Pfluger trions are also a brilliant rod for around the $120 -$130 range. i know u can get a them in 7' not sure if they go any longer. but they still cast a mile.
neither of these two will dissapoint. but ur best bet is get into ur tackleshop n hav a feel of a few different ones and see what u like.

good luck mate.

iv had a play with a fair few rods now in the last yr n a half iv been into fishing and i havent found that longer rods add much distance to casts especially when talking about the cheaper models my mrs 6'8" daiwa infeet punches lures out heaps further then some of my 7ft rods but that retails for around the 260 range wicked rod for that little extra coin

cheaper rods that iv had my little berkly dropshot feels fantastic since it got modifyed i should take it for a spin next time i get to go fishing

trions are good as well

i suppose the big influencing factors in your decision will be

*how far will you stretch your coin to get a nice rod
*will it be for sp's or hb's
*what weight reel and size line will you run on the rod

best bet is take the reel you intend to use while ur tackle shopping and while your picking up a gazillion rods if one feels nice stick the reel on it and see how it feels/balances

The Shimano Starlo Stix Tournament Pro Litespin 731 or Daiwa Tierra 701LXS are both around the same price $130, good value.

Thanks

Cheers guys for all your input..

I've been doing a bit of research online and stumbled across the Shimano Jewel rods... Anyone out there using them? If so what do you reckon?

And if any of you WA members could point me in the direction of some decent tackle shops it would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks once again..

Hi Mcgoo,
I havent had a chance to play with a shimano jewel yet, but they are Ian Miller designed on good graphite blanks so I doubt you would be disappointed with them.

SicStic Pros are a great rod & DohDohDoh have them for $160 I have never had any problems with mine but there is a lot of bad feedback about their warranty coverage & their tendency to snap with any sort of carelessness.

Berkley dropshots are great rods and are great value for the money. So are the Starlo Stix, which was a surprise for me as I generally shy away from starlo, rexhunt or ET gear.

Finally the hardest question of all a good tackle store..... Midland Gunmart fishing & camping are a good bunch of guys who are helpful & knowledgable.
Joondalup fishing & camping are good as well although I havent been there for some time.

I would steer well away from DohDohDoh if you want any sort of customer service and Bluewater Morley & Campbells although they have a good range you will pay for it and they tend to push what they are overstocked with, at least that is my experience.

good luck with your search

Stevo

There is heaps of options out there but some Shimano models that I have used.

Starlo Pro 7'3 is a great all rounder and down around the $130 mark now.

The Starlo Pro range also has a flats spin 7'10 model - my father in law just got this and it balances brilliantly with a 2500 size reel (he got a Stradic)

For a cheaper option the Raider II 762 is a nice long rod, I have had one for a while and it throws lures a mile

As for the Jewels, I have played with them in the shop and they seem nice, build on the same blanks as the Raiders I think but with a fancier paint job and upgraded components so would be a good option also

For a reasonable price mate get a dropshot 2 to 4kg they are inexpensive and damn good rods, you will never regret it i have had mine for about 7 years and it doesn't get much use now but i still rate it.... Aslo have a look a some of the Rovex spinning rods not bad IMO...Aventio they are called from memory

hey mcgoo

i have been looking at the jewel to
i had a feel of one the othere day in my local shop and it feels great
very light weight and very comfortable in the hand
the only thing is i think its more suited to plastics not hard bodies across the flats but thats only my opinion
they do look really cool to

Cool bream gear

ye all new starters you will need a rod that has a fast tapper plenty out on the market you would want a one piece rod and around 7''feet long
fishing reel you would want a 1000 or 2000 there are some good ones on the market for around $150 i wouldnt buy anything cheaper if you fish almost evryday it wont rust or corrode as much as the cheaper models also there is a shimano or diawa serves center were you can have you reel seversed .
i suggest an eggbeater over an baitcaster .
