Maribyrnong River (12 Bream session)

Consistent bites all day, used a friend’s pos rod + pos reel running 8 pound chitty worn loopy sun damaged mono. After a few running sinker casts I realised they were to quick to suck bait off so cast and wait wasn’t an option the best results I could get with little to no gear was to go straight line rigged with 1 swivel 1.2m from the hook baited with prawns.

The current was slow near the bank so the swivel was enough to help the smaller prawns sink faster. I was using a cast - sink - pause - slow lift 4in - sink – pause - slow lift 4in …ect ect. All hook ups and 90% of bites were on the pause.

All but one fish were hooked up about 1.5 to 2.5m from the bank I could feel them tapping all the way to the bank then I’d give one more jig and a long pause if it was not taken in ten seconds I’d real it in before the toadies could eat my bait, was lucky enough to get 12 bream and only 1 toady to shore.

They were a little small but 1 was a pb. The one fish that was hooked about 7.5m off the bank was the biggest one I landed (aprox 37cm and fat!) it was the biggest prawn in the bag that let me cast further, was probably the furthest cast all day, he took the prawn on the drop off the cast, he put up a great fight striping 4-5m of line off the little reel, I high sticked him a little close to the bank and he jumped 1 foot out the water, by far my pb bream wish I had a ruler….

I have a rather large computer screen so I held my pointy nose to the screen and zoomed in and out till it was in scale (no pun intended) and he was 37ish.

Can’t wait to get some descent gear…

Fish 6 was my pb the rest were on the small side.

Stewart.

Wait till you start catching them on lures.

1000% more fun and no smelly hands (unless you are going to use Gulps )

Cheers,
Alex

@ Breamingwithjoy, 1 pack of grub’s n jig heads would double the value of my bream set up at the moment lol, soon as I get some descent gear I'll ween myself off bait.

@ -Pivot-, they came in handy, had to cut about 7 hooks in half to let the baby's go in good health.

@ Emo, learnt that way of fishing on this forum, some smart anglers on here to say the least.

@ nigel2010, ummm had snags in gravy + veg for dinner.

@ Alex, I'm yet to land a bream on a lure (haven't tried), I'm looking forward to it!

Regards,

Stewart.

That's a tuff question! I'm still deciding, if you had a $500 budget what would you recommend? I need the lot let’s say $350-450 rod + reel and $50-100 lures + line to get me going?

I'll be using it just for sp's + hb's. Was thinking something 6.10'- 7.2', 2-4kg, 2000 reel, there's so much on offer these days I think I'll take my time and do a allot of looking around.

Check that one out and you will find yourself even more confused but maybe better informed.

My advice, take your time when choosing an outfit. I have bought sooooooooooo much gear that I don't use but now can't bear to part with. For the money I could have had a $1000+ outfit instead of my $500 one. But then i would have no gear to take mates fishing with....

To get you going, All you need is either a Berkley Dropshot Or Plueger Trion. Both are very good rods for around the $100 mark I'd stick to 6'6" to 7' in the 1-3kg. At 7 foot they start to get a little top heavy! (this happens with exxy rods as well), you can spend alot of money for more bling and toss factor (I'm guilty here too) but these are seriously good rods regardless of $$$.

Theres a bloke here selling used Revros 2000 (smooth with real 4 tech) reels also around the $100 mark as well. Sunline Super PE 8-10lb for around $40 (you can go thinner but more tangles when on L plates) then spend the rest on lures (use this site! some good lure sales of recent and great value but you gotta be quick).
Good Luck

Thanks for the advice, because I'm pretty new to bream fishing I figure a cheaper combo would be a bit more sensible, splurge on lures couldn't hurt though.

I'm pretty much sold on the Dropshot as for reel still undecided...

I took a mate fishing to the same spot today he had a few good rod set ups thankfully, between us we got 17 bream 4 in the low 30's, and get this we caught 6 flat head that were all about 10cm never caught a flatty on the nong before then Bam lol

Stewart.

Ahhhh so that's where the flathead nursery is.

Snags in gravy and veg for dinner... The nong water is lke gravy and the bream from there probably tastes like snags and veg (mixed).... EEWWW!
