is 8lb leader enough for salmon?
(aussie salmon and whatever might be hitting those lures i meant to say)
thinkin of getting 1 x 30m spool of line system egi 1 x 30m spool of sunline egi to try out. just wanted to check that 8lb isn't too light (lost a few hard bodies to sambos b4 on 6lb =P). should i go 10lb maybe? |

If it was me personally I would use 10. But it depends also how you are fishing. I hit the surf beaches almost nightly through winter through salmon season and if your casting big heavy lures i would bump it up again but if your fishing relatively light hardbodies out of a boat with light gear you will get one hell of a fight on 8lb
![]() If your chasing big sambos it often pays to change the treble hooks to 2 single lure hooks (not sure what they are really called). With them you don't have to worry about the trebles coming out when the salmon shakes its head or jumps, however if you go through lures like i do through salmon season buying those special hooks starts getting expensive!! |

8lb is heaps mate, i also fished the salmon season alot this past season. fishing the 90 mile every second night with my bream setups, i ran 4lb main to 6lb leader and it was good fun, even with the biggest only getting to about 2.5-3kg.

this is actually of interest to me as myself and a work mate have been wanting to get into the wa salmon for the last two years but have missed out and not even attempted it.
is our bream gear fine from shore or do we need to go purchase some beach gear (we are both cashed up enough this year and willing to if need be) ifso what sort of rods/reels and line/leeder would be required i would probly use the rod for tailor and mullas maby in the off season whenever i got the chance 9ft 10,12, or 13-14ft required on the perthish side coast for the task we need? dont mind spending upto about 300 on a rod and about 200ish on a reel we got a fair bit of time till salmon season here so would be good to know what to look for we would mostly be peging lures out but the possibility of bait if we have fk all luck on lures would be nice we might even travel south for a weekend during salmon season (oct/sept i think it is over here?)

If your in WA 8lb is definately too light IMO, I use 15-20lb leader and 12-15lb PE main line.
Kenshin depending on where your fishing as to what length rod, I use a 10'6 rod but sometimes an even longer rod would be better because they can be a fair way out so that extra length and casting distance would be really handy. Salmon season is just around the corner can't wait to tussle with some of these awesome sportsfish. ![]() Mark |

I reckon 8lb would be enough for smaller salmon but the 5kg plus monsters would spool you probably, especially from shore. I would try 8 but have a spool of 12 handy in case they are bigger.
Kenshin, I just got a lemax blue mountain 9', 12-30lb for chasing bonito/tailor/salmon. Its perfect for 20-40g lures (rated 15-50g I think). Its acts a bit like a trion, soft and great for casting but loads up well and perfect for fighting with 15-20lb line. I would not push it to 30lb myself. Rod cost me about $200. I have a Daiwa Tierra 3000 on it with 15 and 20lb braid. Any decent 3000-4000 Daiwa or 4000-5000 would suit it well. This is for rock based fishing, more length may be required if fishing from the beach. |

Ive been fishing for salmon for years and i use no less than 8kg mainline and about a 10kg leader. I may up that leader a tad if im around alot of reef, but usually 10kg is ample. That enables me to get into these beauteys. These are from last season off Dunsborough.

I use a 8foot in the surf, have used 10 but it gets ridiculously heavy casting lures continuely. If your in the surf your bream rod wont be suitable (in vic most times anyway) if there are big tides & the fish are out deep - even when wading out past your waist lol. Its pretty insane when a school of 2kg + fish are jumping out of the water 2 meters away from you!!
You should invest in a cheap fly rod and flick around some clouser minnows great fun!! |

Thats some nice sized salmon!! The back of them are very light coloured compared to the ones of that size down south.
