Fluorocarbon as backing?
Heya folks,
I recently bought my first set-up and am looking at finally spooling some of these fancy lines on the reel! I managed to score a cheap 4lb Berkley Vanish (Non-leader) and was wondering if FC line could be used as backing rather than purchasing another spool of mono line. I went out and purchased some 6lb Fireline (I'm on a tight budget ) and plan to top it off with probably some 6lb Vanish leader also.Would the following above work? Having a 4lb FC backing + 6lb braid + 6lb leader? Your help is appreciated. Thanks!

on a bream reel doesnt matter what sort of backing you use, something with a similar diameter to the mainline your going to use so you have a nice even neat knot on the spool, 4lb. vanish will be fine to fireline

Did your setup come with a spare spool??? If it did spool on up with the braid and use mono as backing and spool the other up with fluoro and use mono as backing for that too. If not i would hand onto the fluoro as it is wasted as backing buy a $6 spool of JW mono, i can almost guarantee you will never see your backing in normal breaming scenarios.

Thanks for your prompt replies.
I have a pretty tiny reel and the spool states that with 6lb, it can only hold 80 yards?/meters?. I have a spool of Fireling with 125 yard or 114 m of 6lb. Should I still bother with backing? |

Do a quick search on the topic of backing and you will find heaps of threads and opinion to go through. Backing is in my opinion manditory. Either use nylon/fluoro as backing or as some have suggested electrical tape. The line capacity of the reel will be for mono line so expect to use your full spool of fireline to fill it. You may need 2-3mm of backing on the reel first before you spool up with braid.

I think Braid tends to slip tied direct to the spool, which is why backing is mandatory. I haven't tried with out backing so can't say for sure. You can always try.
I vaguely remember some people use no backing but wrapping tape over the the first couple of wraps to make sure it doesn't slip. You could use fluoro for backing but it is a waste. With a small reel you won't use a lot I expect so not a huge waste (but I would suggest you save it as it not bad line). With my shimano 1000 it didn't fit the full spool of Fins 5lb on so I measured out 75m of braid (1/2 a spool) so I can get two fills out of it and used backing. Figured I wouldn't see the last 25m out of the 75m of the braid anyway.

Thanks for the tip fellas. I got a bit impatient and went ahead this morning. I did the technique of using another spare spool. However, although the spare spool looked full, upon transfer, it seems slightly less
I used FC as backing...the good news is that it was purchased while my old man was in Malaysia for like $8 ![]() ![]() Is this sufficient? I've used only approximately half of my braid spool. If I need to add more, should I simply tie more braid on or do the painful task of filling more backing instead? A simply Double Uni to attach the braid or backing suffice? Mate, fish with it and see. It should be fine you may lose 1-2m on the cast if anything at all. I personally fill mine a little more but, people have differing opinions on these things. I really don't see a problem with how you have it setup now.

Looks Ok. I probably fill mine a little fuller (maybe a half a mm so the line is sitting where the angle taper on the spool lip begins to get steeper which your pretty much on), but also tend to have a few wind knot problems at the start due to over full spools. Fireline is quite springy so underfilling slightly is better than overfilling.
You'll get more fishing in casting slightly shorter with an underfilled spool than you would untangling a massive wind knot caused by an overfull spool.
