Off to Augusta on Wednesday for a couple of days with a few work mates and staying at Molloy Island. Taking the boat down and hoping to give the bream a workout.

Cheers

a big thanks to both tim and leon for the day out, pity the fish weren't co-operating though.with great company and magic weather you can't help but enjoy yourselves.
the dead bream was pretty big mid 40's.had a dead blowie in its gob judging by the tail, probably choked to death rather than a fish kill victim.still getting the smell out of my hands!
water was very discoloured both in the canning and swan, lots coming down from upstream i think and cold at around 15c.
still gotta keep plugging away
cheers.

What did you throw?????

It sounds as if it was ultra shut down, and when it's ultra shut down you have to apply ultra shut down tactics.
I reckon if you were throwing hardbodies you would be doing well to pick up a few, but saying that it's not impossible.
What gear were you throwing exactly, that may have been your problem, Line lb-age, Fluro Mono, jig weight, hook and lure size etc, hell even sometimes i don't catch em. May of just been a bugger of a day.
I would be interested in all the above info though, I think a lot of us are just throwing lures and not fishing.
I eagerly await your reply

Ended up taking Rosco out for the day on Saturday. Weather wasn't too bad, but the fish wouldn't play much.

Narrows wasn't bad when the tide played fair and Rosco managed a 37 and freaked when he dropped a PB 40+ at the surface. That's life.

I hit the Narrows with Zimeric on Sat as well.. between 7.30-9.00 there was alot of activity. I got blown away 6 times and missed a number of hits.. Plus dropped a couple. All on SP's. Bassmaster Watermelon and Motoroil. Used 1/16th jigs as the fish we 3/4 the way to the bottom. 1/32 was taking to long to get to the fish and allowing the blowiers to eat the SP's.
I took Geoff's advice and switch to 4lb leader (Hence the ungodly amount of bust ofs) but not Flurocarbon. Was using Platy Platinum.
Strangely Zimeric was using 10lb mono and landed the only fish we got but certainly didnt get the hits that I had.
Water temp was rediculous. 11.2
A good learning session on finding the fish. Another thing I noticed was the retrieve that was important. very small movements were working well while sharp/hard ones werent getting a touch.
The other thing I noticed was the fish were hitting the SP's away from the pylons, not right against them as you would think.

I think I should change my username from Bubba to Busta tho.. Ive lost count of the number of fish that have done me over in the last month *

when the tides running as hard as what it was on the weekend what is the consensus of option on jig head weight.i used a 1/8 on the weekend around canning bridge but found it just wasn't getting down.
do you use a small weight and let it drift around in the current ?

do you use a medium weight to get it further down & pay out line to see if it gets down ?

or use heavy weight to get straight to the bottom ?

GeoffP - i used 4lb fireline & 4lb stren leader,jigheads 1/16 & 1/8
placcy's were muscadine,watermelon,p/seed & a couple of darker coloured eco's.
switched back to h/b's to cover more water and this produced results.2 very embarassing sized tiddlers and 2 or 3 missed hits.
tim used placcy's most of the time and dropped one at boat.he used a salt/pepper grub of some sort.leon used placcies, same sort of colouring, not sure of line weight for either guy but all similar.
this is my first serious season for winter bream so got a lot to learn and a lot of km's to cover.i'll just keep on going till it all gels.
cheers

Hey guys.
I'm finding lately that the bream are holding deep in this cold weather. I'm sure geoff will agree.
Go with a light leader (flouro is definately an advantage) and small placcies on size 4 jigs (1/16th). yes you'll loose fish if they get into cover, but... whats the use in fishing a heavy leader if you get a 1/4 the amount of hits!!! Hell...Loosing a big fish is still great fun anyway!!!
Matty: I fish 1/16 evrywhere i fish. My hunting ground is the canning bridge as many know, and the tide cranks through there!
Flick upstream of the current and drift the placcies back to you with the current, using long pauses and whatever action you like to impart on your placcie. The placcies will get down without a hassle.
ALWAYS (cant stress this enough!) watch your line for any twitches or movements. This more often than not means a fish has taken interest!
HTH

Dave
