Mate I wouldn't write off the daiwa's just yet, their lower end reels are not much chop as they don't sell to many of them whereas Shimano does which means it makes more sense to put technology into the lower end models.
I have been using a 1500 exceler for the last 3 months and have been reely (har de har har) happy with it. It was an upgrade from a regal 2500 and it was a big step up even though it only cost me $10 more than the regal. I will be buying another in the 2000 size soon. Best advice i can give you is that you can keep a fairly "low end" $120 -$200 reel in excellent condidtion just by cleaning it and keeping it lubricated. Definately have a look at DohDohDohDohDohDohDohDoh.com.au and their current special on the Exceler 2000. But if you must have a shimano I am of no use to you

Hey there,
If you have a hunt around you should be able to get a stradic for under 200 bucks. as for line you really cant go past berkly crystal im using 3 pound at the moment and its virtually hassle free. good line to use if you are starting out.

save up the extra and get a SOL 2000 forsure worth it and for a braid that suits it go the 4lb platypus superbraid.
Ive had this braid for well over a year now and its still going strong, Very minimal wind knots as i didnt even put the whole 120yards on and still have plenty enough for breaming. Its lost all its colour and looks like fireline crystal but still casts like a bullet fills the reel nicely and holds its strength. Defiantly the best braid ive bought, never tried sunline, TD sensor or the likes but it craps all over fins, fireline, stren, nitlon etc. A great low budgeter |

For $100 I found the Penn Applause a great reel, for a cheap reel a definite contender. $200+ grab any brand, the only prob you will have on this site is everyone has their own preference.
If you have enough Dawia then yeah try something different, best thing to do would be to head out and have a fish with someone who has different gear and give it a bash.

I just started breamin' as well and i have a procaster, i reckon its great but it gets salt in it really easy so you have to maintain it and clean it quite a bit but its probably too late if your reel is grinding etc etc
GL with getting a new reel and i hope you catch heaps of fish on it
