Ecogear Lures

Hi guys

I'm just starting out life without bait and I'm seeking some advice.

I know there will be plenty of variation in responses here but that's probably more to do with fishing environments than anything else.

At this stage I'm avoiding the snags until I improve my casting, typically I fish the shallows (0.5 - 2.0m), drop-offs and lake bottom.

What I'm interested in is what action you find most successful with the following:

1. Ecogear SX40 or similar
2. Ecogear MX48 or similar
3. Any Vibes
4. Plastics

I see such variation when I watch other people fish but I don't always get to see or ask what lure they are using.

Regards

Rossco

My advice is to keep it simple. Go really slow, plenty of pauses and then some subtle twitches. Mix it up a bit and work out whats best for you, and what the fish are keen on at the time. A good tip that a bloke down here in adelaide told me years ago is to watch your rod tip when your twitching your lures. Whatever your rod tips movements are, that's what your lure's gonna be doing at the business end. I'm sure you'll get plenty of great advice from this site, so enjoy honing your skills and goodluck. Oh yeah, kiss all your money goodbye... once the lure addiction kicks in it's impossible to shake!!

both the SX and MX will be a great option in that depth of water..go hunting for weedbeds with broken sand patched and depth variations, bit of 'snagg proof' structure in these locations would be great as well...rocks, drop offs, channels, channel markers, mored boats...just about anything that breaks up the tide flow and creates an ambush location

vibes are probly not a really good option in that depth, allthough fishable the suspending to slow floating HB will be more versitile...

as for SP' just about anything ! start from the top and work you way down,
squidgy bugs on resin heads or .5gm in the wind
wrigglers, worms and and and..just a matter of pairing your choice with the right jig head...

Rossco,

This time of year you'll do better with plastics or vibes rather than sx40's and the like.If I were you I'd be spending my dollars on these items and buy the HB's later in the year when they will come into there own.

As for action it really depends on the type of placcy and the situation.

Personally I get best results with placcies by casting at structure and letting them sink with an open spool, watch the line for any tiny twitches, if/when you see these line bites close the bail and strike.

If it gets to the bottom without being taken then an ultra slow retrieve with/or without small hops/lifts/pauses ect, keep repeating this varying the retrieve until you get a strike.

There are many ways to skin a cat, but for a newbie to plasctics this way should get a result.

There's heaps more to it than just that, but it's a start.

Good luck.

Thanks Guys

Some great tips for me to try when I get the chance!

You're right Matt, the lure addiction is costly, but hey, if your not catching fish you can always line them all up on the table and play with them, biggest to smallest, make rainbows, hook them together and make trains..........they do have other uses!!!!!!!

Wife thinks I'm an idiot, spending real money buying fake fish to catch real fish that I then let go!!

Wrong place, wrong time!

In the past 2 months I've fished The Tambo & Mitchell Rivers heaps, Lakes Entrance, Bemm River, Marlo twice, Upper Nowa Nowa Arm and Lake Tyers. Spent the whole day at Nowa Nowa & Marlo the other day and didn't get a hit!

Fishing not that great in the Gippsland Lakes system at the moment but they are on up at Bemm River.

My wife has NO idea how much I spend on fishing, (or Beer, betting, golf, my boat & 4WD) however we were at Kmart recently and I showed her a Rod & Reel combo for about $30, she said 'they're not that expensive are they', I told her that they are much better value than that at the fishing shop............ which is technically correct if you assume $30 Kmart combos are absolute crap and spending $250 on a rod & reel gives you quite a good product!!!!!!!

If she knew lures were typically between $15-$25 she'd........yeeee gads.....I just can't imagine what would happen. I'd be hanging up the spurs for a while that's for sure!

I think its funny how u guys keep that information from wives and girlfriends about what u spend on Lures.
I know and understand because I'm female and I like to fish and u need the best lures, rods and reels for the job, but really u think of it how much do they spend on shoes, make up, perfumes etc... It all adds up.

here is my opinion on this topic, just plain and simple;

Soft plastics, vibes, blades, or any basic sinking lure for the colder months.
And
Hardbody's (surface, deep, shallow etc) for the hotter months.

Like at the time being I have noticed a huge difference since I changed to soft plastics from hardbodies in the cooler weather.
Not sure if thats just how my water-way works but you just might want to keep that in mind.
Hope this helps,
