Why do you put mono on you reel before braid??

Was reading some posts on another forum and some on said make sure you put mono on your reel before putting the braid on and didnt say why??

Is it so that the braid fill up to the max or what??

Cheers, Zac

Braid costs more than mono. hence, only put on as much braid as you'll need to catch the fish, rather than as much as you need to fill the spool. Fill up the spool to a level you think you may 'never' need to get to while fighting a fish, and then fill with braid from then on.

and

Under heavy load the waxy braid can also slip on the shiney spool, whereas the mono will have some grip.

Braid can slip on the spool and when it does it digs into itself which can cause all sorts of dramas, the other reason is as you say so you can fill up the spool properly instead of buying in bulk you only need the normal 150m spools

Braid slippage

The reason the braid slips on the spool is beacuse it does not stretch and hence will not grip the spool like a mono line will.

The fact that braid is waxy, or not, has no bearing on the slippage. They are all very smooth and slippery on the surface.

I've had lots of occasions where customers have brought their reels back complaining the drag does not work. The first question I ask is if there is any mono behind the braid, and the answer is always no.

If braid is put onto the spool correctly, under extreme tension, it will not dig into itself. If you can press indentations into the braid with your fingers then it is not on tight enough.

Ill second marks answer, its all got to do with the braid gripping better when mono is underneath, but if you dont want to use mono i find electrical trap works well for me.

Mainly so that the braid does not slip when under pressure.

Thanks BrissyBreamer
