Digital camera recommendation

I am after a new digital camera and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or experience. Not after DSLR or anything, just a normal point and shoot type in a compact type up to about $350. About 8 to 10 megapixels, easy to use, large display and value for money (most important).

Cheers,
Nathan

Yeah I got a Canon ixis 80 (8 megapixel) a few months back for $240 and think it's great. Nice and compact, hardly even realise it's in your pocket and takes good photos too.

Yeah the IXUS are a very solid japanese built unit. Mine has taken a beating and it still takes great shots for what it is. One thing is they don't show their true potential just using them on auto. Invest in a small tripod and learn to use the manual functions. Some of the pre-sets like fireworks and snow can really make a difference also. The macro function is also great for taking close ups of new tackle purchases

Thanks all, I was already leaning towards the IXUS but the 95 was a bit over the price limit considering I will want more memory and a cover etc. The IXUS 80 could be a winner I think.

cheers

I have the olympus 1030, which is outside the budget but I like the waterproof bit. Mine hasn't been faultless but was fixed under warranty just took some time.

Also have a fuji not quite dslr older model. great camera excellent zoom great pictures, but not waterproof (which is a issue when your walking the milford track and get about 200mm rain on the last day).

I noticed the other day (in a Retravision shop) that Fuji have brought out a shockproof waterproof 8 or 10mp camera to rival the olympus and I think it was around the $300 - 350 mark. Didn't take a lot of notice cause I have all the camera's I need at the moment. But I would suggest its worth taking a look.

Panasonic make a few good ones that have an awesome zoom range some rannge from 28mm to 300mm in a compact, not quite as compact as the ixus but the huge zoom can come in quite handy for other applications. Lieca lens as well

What's a good portable model for macro shots??? ideally something with an aluminium or similar exterior that can take a bit of a bash. Sick of using the mobile for pics and my digi is crap and the missus won't let me take any of her DSLR's
