Strange Shimano design
Hi guys I stumbled across an online review of the Shimano Sustain FE and there is something I find quite odd about its design.
We all know that graphite frame reels were phased out in the last decade or so due to possible flexing under stress that could lead to gears being out of alignment etc. Hence the move back to aluminium or metal bodied reels. The Shimano Sustain has an aluminium frame and graphite sideplate. Nothing out of the ordinary here...or is there??? Look closely at these pics As you can see the gearing and main shaft are installed on the graphite sideplate! Now I may not be a mechanical engineer but you would think that this design negates the whole benefit of having an aluminium reel! I understand that the smaller size reels would unlikely receive the kind of stress required to flex the body but I would be pretty pissed if I bought a larger size Sustain (e.g 8000) on the presumption I was buying an aluminium reel (regardless of the graphite sideplate). They might as well have just made the whole reel graphite! Im not trying to create a Shimano vs Daiwa debate here, I just thought I'd share this info with you as I found it very strange! Here is a link to the original review if you want to read it - http://www.blackbassreviews.com/revi...sustainfe.html And for the record I own both Shimano and Daiwa reels...
