Wasteful Hobbies

Just wondering what your most wasteful/costly hobbies are? Some people would say that fishing is very expensive what with $500+ rod and reels and hundreds of dollars worth of tackle but I have to disagree. If you look at the number of hours you get out of each rod and reel etc and break the cost down per hour, there isn't much else out there that is as cheap.

For me the most wasteful hobby I have ever had was RC cars. I had two of them and spent probably $1000 all up. I reckon if I broke it down I got about 2-3 hours of run time out of them and they now sit at home needing repairs(granted they were both second hand). To be fair 3 hours is a fair amount of time considering each run is about 10 minutes before you have to fill the tank up etc. I found after each outing with the cars I would have to go home and tighten up all the screws etc. They were hard work!!! Gotta say nothing beats the sound of a tiny motor doing over 30,000 rpm flying past you at 70kph though. If I had some money to burn I would definately do it over.

Justin

Collecting watches especially Omegas and Rolex . For some (not me), it is a Patek Philippe or nothing...

Yeah i had a crack at those rc cars, i was stupid i bought and ex race buggy, and took it out then i coudlnt drive it cause it was way to fast it did like 90kmh and over rough ground it was impossible to control for a beginer, so i sold it bacfk to the guy for $100 less than i paid, so i guess i got out of it easy,

the most wastefull hobby that i think i ever partook in was, motocross, apart from the bikes and trailers and fuel and insurance fees and race liscences and race day fees and 20 bucks everytime you wanted to ride at a track and all the gear and parts when you break down and medical fees whenyou break stuff, it cost and arm and a leg literaly... lol after doing that for a year i should have declared bankrupcy!! i came to my senses and got back into fishing, got myself a nice 385 with my mate and some new gear and now all it costs me its 20 in fuel when i wanna go out cause i split it with my mate and a few lures every now and then, heaps more fun cause you know your not really goin to break your leg everytiem you go out!!!

Oh and not to mention my car! lol got a VT ss manual thats pretty hot and it continues to cost me money! here are some pics!
i love watching the price of oil per barrel because its a good indication of my wealth! if it goes up i get real poor real fast!!!

the black hole of money ....

motorsport for me - makes fishing look bloody cheep even when you factor in 15k on a boat.

got into rallying young, done 3 targa events at $5k entry each, ARC rounds and about $1k entry. probably $3k to get suit boots helmet flame restistand under ware etc..... not to mention mucking around with some classic cars, escorts and minis, great fun but like pulling the pin on a hand granade .... bloody quick cars but not so reliable.

that said i would not trade the experiances and fun along the way .... money well spent i'd say.

You're right there. No regrets. To this day if I smell that nitro fuel it gets me excited even though it was so expensive.

Tropical fish!

Still in the hobby and love it but when your a beginner and you dont know what your doing it can get costly.

Then when you do know what your doing and you want the rare/exotic species your in real trouble cause these fish will die at any slight change in water temperature, being transported, eat too little, eaten too much, not enough of a mixed diet, for unknown reasons get a disease and die, dont change the water enough, change the water too much...the list goes on

But I love my fish and my fishing.

Rallying and Photography

It has to be rallying and Photography for me.
I bought a 1974 KE20 Corolla for $750 road registered and spent 4 months and $17500 building it into a competitive car for the Vic championship.
Ran the car for 6 years started and finished 45 or so events and won a couple of class championships, never had any money cause it was spent on fuel or tyres and entries. best fun you can ever have in a car. Going sideways through the forest at 120 plus kms on a road that you wouldn't ride your mountain bike down is an absolute hoot.

here are some pics
cage prep

1st event

sideways

night time

And then there is the endless amount of money that you can spend on camera equipment.
A lens like this could cost you 6-7K

Now I have started fishing and it doesn't take long to spend the dollars but a heap of fun.
Just a bit of what I did.
Dale.

ill speak for alot of the kids in my generation and say.... pokemon cards.
what a waste of money, spent all my pocket money on them

also footy cards, i have a clothes draw full of them. draft pick signiture cards countless rare cards. and the double ups, i dont want to start counting them
this hobbie ended when fishing took over but. some money for the future but when i see them off.
