I have used the small Pflueger President for a while up here. Smooth, nice drag also, but tolerancing and tightness didn't last too long. Also had corrosion problems with the spool, but Pflueger were great in sorting that out.
With something that size for heavier line definitely look for a metal bodied reel. If you are keen on Pflueger, the Medalist, Infusion and Contender would be the models more suited to the task, in the 35/40/45 sizes. The heavier models are indeed that though: heavy! |

i have a 2003 ? model Contender 40 size, black alloy body with the stainless spool...what a CRACKER of a reel...it was given to me to test..and test i did, gave it a hit with INOX as per all my new reels, loaded it with 15 lb FINS and went to town, rain, hail , shine, sand, salt water bathing, blasting with the hose rarly..all the good stuff, left the drag screwed up for 3 months while it sat out on the elements and it still purred, to this day i still havent had to give it a service...cant sing its praises loud enough...id have to say as close to bullet proof as i have ever seen...

Would not put an MG reel like the Supreme near a situation where you'd need 20 lb braid. Nothing to do with the fishing, but heavier gear usually ends up getting knicked about a bit as well, and Pflueger's Mg treatment has not stood the test of time just yet. The Supremes are still heavy for a magnesium reel too.
They do have a smaller Supreme now, the Supreme XT, as well as a new 25 size Supreme. Check Pflueger USA's website. www.pfluegerfishing.com The 25 size is pretty small, but with good capacity (President). In other ranges they even do a size 20. Now, a smaller Contender would have been nice. Shame it appears they don't make the Contender anymore. |

Fair enough. I stand better informed. Time will tell whether they are up to it long term. Now the weight saving on that class of gear ain't really gonna figure greatly, is it?

Sold a contender 7550 to a mate and he's loving it..good reel.shame they don't make them smaller.
RE line.. pound may drop to 15 pound using ultra thin braid..expensive stuff already got a shimano 2000 and nearly sold it, now just need something smooth and strong around the 3000 size as mentioned earlier just wanted to get another Pflueger that smooth and reliable with known history.. |
