Crushing Barb's?
Just thought I would try and get a bit of a picture of what people out there are doing. My preference is to crush the barbs on my hooks. I reckon I have dropped one fish because of it. That fished wrapped itself around a snag and by the time i got the line out he was gone. Thing is I probably wouldn't have got the line back if he was still tugging away at it.
What does everyone else out there do? In my opinion I would urge that everyone crushes their barbs so that they don't kill the fish pulling the hooks out. Justin |

I always crush my barbs, that away, when i get them caught in the car, on my clothes, or even in myself, they are easier to get out.
Probably helps the fish as well. Cheers Nath |

I always crush my barbs on trebles for bream, but not on single hooks for say SP's.
If I'm targetting fish that may jump (i.e. salmon) then I don't crush the barbs as they can be easily thrown.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Crushing the barbs leaves a little "bump" that is enough to hold a fish, but makes unhooking a fish, yourself, your clothes or your landing net a little easier.
When jumpers are on the menu, like queenfish, barra and tarpon, the barbs stay on. |
