Looking at a setup for breamin'

Is this a good deal on these rods/reels?

Reels:
Daiwa Capricorn 2000 $295
Daiwa Laguna 2000 $189

Rods:
Daiwa 6ft6in Procaster V: $179
Daiwa 6ft6in Procyon: $149

How fast is the tapering on these rods - the guy in the shop couldnt say for sure..

Are the prices looking ok?

hey there,

these aren't bad choices or prices.

i'd have to add my suggestions tho'

go for a 7' rod, they provide a number of benefits over traditional 6' and 6'6" models. i have a procaster z 7' and its performance is unbeleivable. although its able to cast the 1.5g lures a fair distance its on the heavier side (good for multi use and dragging big fish out of snags). its a real nice rod.

if you're going for a cheaper rod and don't have sambos, rat kings and such in mind (as i did

), shimano squidgy series 7' rod, designed by ian miller and starlo, is superb for the money (around $120). my mate has one and for the lighter end of the spectrum it does a very good job. (casts light lures a mile)

in terms of reels, the capricorns aren't bad. they have a great drag and are pretty smooth although on opening one up i've found them to be exactly like the former regal. not too good, especially when compared to the emblem z its superseding.

have a look at the new stradic's from shimano. similarly priced they definately are the goods, with improved spool design. or go a step up and get a team daiwa (as i did). these are superb reels, mine has served me extremely well.

Mate, the procaster is a nice rod, I use one, the Daiwa Laguna is a good value reel, any Daiwa is a top reel as are Shimano, the procaster is now down to about $120 in some shops, the Laguna is $179 usually, have a look at the Shimano reels at about the $100 mark, nothing wrong with them, my set up is the procaster rod and a Laguna 2500 reel, 4lb fireline, the okuma Epix is a favourite reel too.. Also check out the Okuma Metaloid for about $80, nice reel too. Neville/

argo you dont show where you are from .but anyway look up campbells pro tackle they have a good range of tackle all sorts of prices to choose from.make shore you have aplay with them b4 you buy.
might not sort you needs .

Yes.. see your point!

The store in Inglewood, Perth is a less-than-handy four hour plane trip from Sydney (where I am from) unfortunately

The prices for that gear were all 'marked down' from higher prices in the store I looked at.. so Im surprised to hear that they are not good deals.. Sounds like classic marketing.

Tis why Im looking for a virtual store to give me some kind of better benchmark on them..

I'd be lookin at the Shinao rods aswell! The stella and Squidgy rods are top quality and around the 100 dollar mark!!!
Match this with a Laguna, Samuria, or Okuma Epix and you'll have a sweet setup!

I'm not sure why you think it is bad that the Capricorn shares some internals with the old Regal Z series, they earn't themselves a great reputation over the years. Also the Harbodyz series has infinite anti-reverse which the Regals didn't, so there must be some updates and improvements to the works inside.

I think more does need to be said...
The Regals I tried here in Australia most certainly disn't have infinite anti-reverse. Sometimes the US market gets different spec reels with the same model names as other parts of the world.
I don't think there was any suggestion that the Regals sold here weren't suitable for use in saltwater either.

Our host "breammaster" Warren has a couple of Regals and has always indicated that he is pleased with them in past posts.
I'm sure he has been using them in saltwater with no ill effect.
