Gloves

hi all,

after freezing my hands to numming levels on the last few trips i think its time to get a decent set of gloves, which should in theory, once removed, make knott tying rigging up etc a bit easier on the cold mornings after a run of any length.

i've had look through whitowrths who only carry the sailing gloves - no fingers on most. ranger only has full woollen type ones and i guess a water resistant kind of set up would be better than thoses.

so question is ... if your a glove user, what sort and where from.

I got a cheap pair from K-mart for about $10-$15 (fingerless) and they are a god send. You can still tie knots etc while wearing them

I use those fingerless cyclist gloves with thick padding around the palm area as I have a tiller steer. Going to upgrade to those gel padded cyclist fingerless gloves that cost around $60 mark. Like Stu I can still do knots with them on and still feel hits.

Kathmandu will be starting a sale this week I believe especially if you are a member. They seem to have some really warm ski gloves, etc if warmth is what you're looking at.

thanks for the replys guys.

did you all bother trying to get water proof / resistant ones or just "normal" ones....

richo yours fulll fingers or "stubbies" ....

i thought my fingers would still freeze up with the fingerless ones but from what i gather stu & carol you reckon they still make a differance yeah..

When you live in a lower class boating world like me and drive a poor man's tiller steer and not some luxurious console, your left hand is at work indeed, sore and tired thus you don't feel the cold. Must admit my right hand does feel more coldness however I wind with the right so both hands are at work a lot of times IMO! Never really thought much about it, just something I have to live with IMO as I don't like the idea of having to keep taking the gloves off when fishing as quiet likely my gloves will end up in the waters!

I think snowbee make a neoprene set of gloves that have full fingers on the middle ring and little fingers and the split fingers on the thumb and the index finger. The split fingers cut half way through the palm side of the finger and velcro dots on the back so they fold out of the way. I have a pair the same not made by snowbee and the only hassle was initially the neoprene didn't fold well but left them stored folded for a while and all is good. They are in the flyfishing sections I think.

Brad, I had the exact same thought yesterday so today I went looking around at whats available.

Kathmandu had some woolen gloves with a thumb which folds back and velcro holds it open but I didn't like the thought of wet woolen gloves.

I bought these ones from DohDohDohDoh outdoor, they were only about $15 and I think they will work well.

I have a crap pair from Ray's which are the insulated woolen type with half fingers and thumb. They do make a difference, however I end up just wearing the reel hand one as the rod feels like it will be ripped from my grasp by the combination of partial numbness and a decent fish.

Emo's look alright though, might upgrade.

how about the dive shop? i use diving wetsuit gloves, they are ok wet or dry, they made from rubber, i use the 2mm ones not the thick ones or else your hands sweat and thick rubber is too stiff, when they become wet , your body heat warms the water inside, it feels warm and when wet again, the cold water doesnt get inside with the warm water, it still feels warm, thats why i feel ok with them,
i also wear a 2 piec wet suit, both are 2mm, a top and pants, that way i dont have to wear too mant pants or jumper and look fat, i hate the one piec wet suit(surf ones) cos the zip is behind on your back therefor jumper and the top half wet suit gota come off before doing a pee over board, takes too long to get off when busting to pee in no time.
cheers ben

How about a can of man the hell up? Sorry my therapist thinks I should keep thoughts to myself more often

Seriously mate, I cant be bothered with them anymore. My ones are from ocean to outback and they cover all apart from the index and middle finger.

They still let the cold in- wheather its spotlighting or fishing. The best ones I have found so far are my leather riggers gloves. No pretty to look at but nothing gets through them. And dont even bother fishing with them on.

Im going to look at some of the mountain designs stuff too. Perth round we are going to need beanies, gloves and either shoes or socks under our crocs deckshoes.

But come fishing time "the gloves are off" haha

Got mine from Sewelly. Neoprene with velcro on wrist. Thumb, middle and ring fingers are split and fold back onto velcro dots. I think they're Outer Mark. Much the same as crusty's

Jeeeez Brad

There's Drivin' an Fishin', for drivin get down to Kathmandu or Mountain Designs and get some propper waterproof jobbies that keep out the wind and water, spend the dosh 'cos they are wirth it.

For fishin' you want skin on carbon mate, forget the pigskin unless protectin' from the deadly DohDohDohDoh mate, then go tipless, so-to-speak, like a good boy
