got the breamLESS blues

I have put hours into getting bream on soft plastics and hardbodies and got a a total of one bream.

I have a neat boat, best gear (eg 4lb fireline) follow the advice of the guys who catch bream ignore the advice from guys who dont catch anything.

Even paid for a lessons from a bream tournament angler learnt so much particualr casting skills but no fish.

For example on Anzac day went to Patterson Lakes guys next to me got at least 4 fish, despite doing everything the same as them apart for ma strike or 2, got nothing.

the months go by, nothing to show for my efforts, time and money

should I persist? go back to bait fishing? or take up golf?

Persist.

I haven't been fishing long. When I took it up, almost exactly a year ago, for the first four months or so, I didn't catch a single fish on a lure, and it certainly wasn't due to lack of trying. Granted, I didn't buy a boat or anything, but rods, reels, tackle, and the lures!

And then one day it just all started happening, one fine day when everything went right, and not only a bream, but a big, fat blue noser slammed my 2" fluro yellow grub, and a minute or so later, was in the water next to me. The next six trips in a row, I picked up at least two bream per trip on lures, and since then have got a few on the fly as well. One day it'll all happen, and things will come into focus. The more bream you catch, the more confidence you will have to catch others.

Keep at it, but remember that you're not spending your time to catch fish, you're FISHING. In all those long hours before my first lure-caught bream, I was having a great time. It's the activity itself. The fish are a bonus.

But yeah, a pretty bloody good bonus! Keep at it, they'll come along.

Mate, don`t give up yet - im sure your time will come. The amount of times weve fished in groups of 3, the count is often something like say 10, 6, 3 its just the way it happens. You might get 1 this week and the other guy 4, tomorrow it could be you 4 him 1. Persevere, and im sure you will prevail.

And trust me I was only getting 1 or 2 compared to the lads 6-8 fish for quite a while, then I slowed the retrieve down even more, and I started getting around their numbers. It might only be 1 tiny little thing you have to change to make all the difference??.

cheers

Breamless

Remember what they say,Location.location or as breamers say Structure ,Structure and Structure.
I've found you have to think of what the bream eat and do to get a feed and substitute your bait for food and then it seems to come together.

Hi Mate, just stick with it, be it bream or barra we have all been there at one time, I have a mate who goes barra fishing with me every year and it took him three trips up north before he got his first barra.

Cheers Warren

Don't give it up yet.
I was in the same situation as you, got the right gear, boat, line ect.. and could not crack it for a bream (although I got flathead down pat) and then with some guidance and persistance it all came good and now I am getting fish on a regular basis.
For me it was tecnique, it is something like trying to explain an orgasm, until you experience it personally.......well you get the idea. Until I knew what a bream take was like I did'nt know, now that I do know, I realise just how many fish I missed in earlier days.
Hang in there, you will get it eventully

Dude stick at it, it took me over a year fishing for bream on lures to get my first one and that was undersize. Last weekend I had a session that saw 160 bream come over the side of two boats.

It will happen just stick at it.

By the way who was the Tournament angler you had lessons with?

further to what terryd said, it is also HOW the fish eats on the given day... once you start catching them and learn feel how they eat and behave you will start catching them.

for example, after all this rain the yarra bream in the city are not as aggressive as they used to be when i first started fishing them. i am now down to just dropping the sp and then reeling it really really really slow and feel the subtle pull and then i pause and wait... i don't even strike because if i strike, it's gone. that's very different from the more aggressive methods i employed when i started catching them over a month ago.

develope a strategy

Where u're entering a comp on planning a weekend trip

make a plan !!!

i like to stick to a basic plan,

then just change slight things according to the circumstance....!

the plan u choose might not be the exact one to start with so u need to be able to change it .......if things don't work out, but stick to a plan as long as needs be cause it is more a confidence thing .....giving u sumthing to focus on ........this works for me ....better than just fishing willy nilly

make it the sport that it is, u wouldn't play the british open with out a course plan or fish a bream comp with out one either ......so i've found it helps me concentrate on what i'm doing if a think a lil about what techniques i'll use where and when .......

it's probably the tinyest thing ......(ei. use a lighter leader) or (use a sent cream).

keep at it a post us when u crack it ...!

cheer's drew

That sound's a bit Jack

Who is that charged you to take him out fishing? Over here we are more than happy to get people out and into it, what happend to Who shares Wins?.
Stick at it and don't go paying more people to get you onto fish, that's not what we are all about, getting a guide to take you around on a river is one thing but paying a tournament angler sound's a bit poor.
Regards Geoff

Mate dont give up what ever you do!
Also, i think you took what Geoff said the wrong way. He was simply stating that there are many guys who will take you out and show you spots, techniqu, tips, etc. for free! Why bite a guys head off for simply tryin to help you out. It is your choice, but dont rip on one of the guys who regularly takes guys out for help and tips, for free!
IMO, Geoff has made a good point. This site is all about helping people out and as already mentioned "Who Shares Wins".
I dont blame him for being a bit surprised at the fact that someone on this site would bother paying someone for that!
As for being uninformed, your the one who stated he was a Tournament angler. Why not just call him a guide? You cant blame him for taking your word for it
Oh well.

Dave

PS: good luck in your future breamin efforts!

It's ok Iv'e done it before

I won't start any fight's on a public forum, but the fact's I had were
1. You sounded like you used any old tournament Angler
2. Didn't I say that if he was a "guide" and by that I mean a gentleman or lady who has liscense and like you said "the cred" then why not

Maybe I did sound quite full of myself, over here though Rodmy, if you were having trouble myself or Bear would only be too willing to get you out and try our gut's out to get you onto a fish for nothing.
If you have a look in the getting started forum on this site I have posted on more than the odd occasion that if you are generally having trouble, get in touch with me.
You should Private message Herds, David,Kevvy, Bob d fisherman and any other West Australian Breamer and they will Back me up.
Mate I was just annoyed that you may have been taken advantage of.
No hard feelings from me if you don't have any
Regards Geoff
