Daiwa winding friction?

Recently bought myself a Shimano symetry and was suprised at the little effort required to wind the handle compared to my Daiwa Laguna! The handle of the shimano will turn under it's own weight where as the laguna I can leave at any position and it stays there. The daiwa works perfectly fine and is maintained regularly. The shimano is still practically new.

Just wondering if this is a feature of all Daiwa/shimano reels? Will the symetry get a bit less free as I use it more?

Not having held a Symetre or Laguna in my life, I can't speak for the two.

However, when comparing between my Capricorn and Luvias, the Capricorn can spin under its own weight longer than the Luvias.

However, I don't think a test like that reveals a lot.

This is because the rotor and handle assembly of the Capricorn is much heavier than that of the Luvias (which is modded with the machine cut handle), which means the Capricorn will spin longer than the Luvias because of 'physics' to put it simply, just like it takes longer to stop a heavier car if you apply the same brake force (friction). So that's just something to think about.

There's quite a number of forum members owning a Symetre, so you might get your answers through them.

The laguna has a different type of gearing to the symetre. The other daiwas like the Sols, Kix and Tierra have a different type of gearing again, which is also different to the luvias and so on.
I've used both the laguna and symetre and found them both to be smooth.
There's a chance that there is either too much grease packed into the laguna or one of the bearings is starting to sieze, so take off the spool and unscrew the handle and give the whole reel a decent spray with WD40. Leave it to soak in for a few minutes then wipe the reel clean. Before you put the handle back on, give it one small drop of fine grade oil in the two holes on either side of the body ( where the handle goes in ) before putting the handle back in, screw it up tight and see how it goes.
Only use singer machine oil or a proper reel oil, not grease.
If it still feels a bit stiff, it could need a new bearing, maybe even the anti reverse bearing.
Hope this helps ?

As I said it has been maintained. I've previously pulled the laguna apart and all the bearing have been greased. I chose grease over oil because of the longativity of lubrications obtained from using grease. The rest of you use oil for all the bearnig in your spin reels? Generally I only use oil in my baitcasters in the spool bearing and the lever wind. Might be the source of the difference. The feel isn't actually a problem, just an odd observation.

Hi Turley

Mim used to have a Daiwa laguna and as they wear you need to shim up the bearings with those super thin copper washers. it is just the nature of the beast.

Grease is certainly needed for the gearing and it helps protect and seal the bearings from moisture, but it should only be a thin smear, nothing more.
I suppose we have reels like certates, exists and stellas to enjoy how smooth they are and as we get lower and lower in the scale reels probably shouldn't feel quite as smooth ???
One of the best reels I've ever owned was a big mitchell 499, the toughest reel built for its time, but smooth it certainly wasn't !
Anyway, I suppose the main point is that your laguna is performing well enough to fish with.

Yeah, laguna is perfectly fine. Looks like there isn't any particular reason for the difference so, i'll just keep fishin
