if u cast out near a pole and u get a fish on the hook. it the fish goes around the pole is there anyway to get them to come back around or not snap your line?

Freespooling (letting line out) will sometimes help.

I heard of a gu tourny angler taking 4mins to land a 40cm (fork) bream not to long ago (in a tournament) using this technique.

It depends on whether your main line is around the pole or your leader.

Most times its your main line, in which case you can wave goodbye to your fish and usually your most expensive lure.

If you're lucky, and you've set up right, you can land the fish.

If I'm landbased, on a structure, I'll put a 2 mtre, 8lb fluro leader on my 6lb braid main line.
Usually landbased your closer to your fish and it will try and swim under you because you're standing on the structure. A longer, heavier leader will sometimes make the difference, because the mono leader will be around the pole, and its a bit tougher against abrasion. Dont try and skulldrag him around or your guaranteed to lose him. Just hold it as best you can. It may take a while, but youve still got your fish on your line. One of 2 things will happen, your line will break, or, he'll swim back around. The longer you wait, the more chance of landing it.

Like I said at the start.....if your lucky.

From a boat or a shore its a lot harder because your usually further from your structure and most likely its your main line thats caught up. All you can do is tighten your drag so it wont rub against the pole any more and just hang on. It might swim back around...I doubt it though.

Good luck!
Greg

It's possible... Happened to me a few weeks ago, and he wrapped me around a pylon... The 4lb crystal and 4lb fluro held up just fine... I kept the pressure on, got closer to the pylon, unwrapped it once, and he came around under the pressure on his own, and straight in to the net...

Other times... you just get smoked though.

Yea spot on. Landed alot freespool'n around poles/snags etc.

As soon as you know it's in there, freespool and feather with your palm and chase it around if you can.

danger

we used to do it in the uk a lot ,you would hook a big fish on the river and just as you got it close to the side it would take off into the vegetation either a reed bed or lillies or tree stumps there is no point in trying to haul him out cause they just go deeper then you have lost them we used to put the rod in its holder with the bail arm open light a smoke up (that when i used to smoke) and wait for the line to start peeling off the spool then click it back over and 9 times out of ten the fish would be yours try it next time you get snagged up on a fish it might just work

Freespooling works for snags, but not for pylons and poles. If a fish is around a pole, freespooling will damage a lot of your line by rubbing on the barnacles. It also gives him more line to wind around the pole.

Basically, your probably going to lose the fish anyway, so I suppose anythings worth a try. Just be patient and dont try and haul it back....and dont smoke while your waiting!

Free spooling fools the fish into thinking it has broken free from the line.
If the line hasn't embedded/tangled into the structure the fish will attempt to break from the lair.
This tactic is even more evident in open water when some game fish such as yellow tail kings are hooked in LBG in shallow water.
They immediately head for a reef ledge rubbing the line on the structure to break it off.
When you free spool the yellow tail kings immediately swim back into the open water where drag pressure is increased to re control the situation.
Unless you can pull tangled braid cutting into structure braids poor serrated edge abrasion resistance will see the fish bust off.

Ok so I must have dreamt the 50 or so I'v retrieved from poles over the years by freespooling..... Or I just love lying........?
Hey Pigscuttler, someone got out of the wrong side of the bed.

I wasn't have a crack at you, or anyone elses methods!
I'm just saying what works for me and what doesnt work for me. Maybe I worded it wrong, sorry if you you took it as a swipe at you.

To be fair to "Bust Off Brad" - Oils aint oils and - poles aint poles.

You wont get much trouble from freshly driven poles with a plastic wrap around it. But at the other extreme, are the ancient poles covered in Barnacle that shred human flesh with the slightest contact.

From what I have observed, you can see-saw your leader over some poles all day but others snap you off at first contact.

It has everything to do with the abrasive capability of the pole you are dealing with and how hard the fish is pulling. I know what I am saying is very obvious but I know through personal experience how lightly you have to brush a pylon in my area with your bare foot before this happens.

P.S. you barely have to touch them

Your area is a little more extreme than most, so I'll allow you this one.

But, so we revert back to that ago old topic...

That said I dont disagree that going easy on wrapped fish is the best policy.

But I also think its worth mentioning that some verticle structures are nastier than others.
