New Daiwa Exist 1003

G'day All,

As most of you know I am a huge fan of the Shimano Stella and Shimano JDM Twinpower 1000 size reels for my type of ul fishing. I am however always looking for something similair in size and smoothness and quality. Was a huge Daiwa fan way back in the days of the SS700 and SS1300. I only switched to Shimano because at the time DAiwa failed to offer a high end Ul reel. Well it seems that is no longer the case. They are now offering the Daiwa Exist 1003. I can not read alot of Japanese but it is smaller then a 2000 Exist but will be able to ultize the spools in that size as well as its own size spool. I believe it will weigh around either 165 gr or 155 gr. I am very anxious to see and try this reel. So if any of you still prefer a smaller reel for your bream rods check it out. I provided some pictures and a link to the story about the reel. I hope that its ok mods? If not please remove the links.

Nice looking reel that one and i am sure the handle can be changed to the proper side quite easily.

Just watch out with these reels, the handle thread is VERY short.
2 1/2 turns backwards and the handle comes off!

We lost a handle over board one day

I would prefer something like 2506 or 2508. I found larger diameter spool cast way better, and the longer handle is more comfortable to use.

Sweet as. Some people like the smaller reels, me for one. Others like the bigger stuff. Bigger spools for more capacity, longer handles for comfort. Little more weight to balance rods, etc. Horses for courses.

Needs a cork knob, a deeper spool (regular 1500 should be fine), and a warning sticker for GregL.

GregL, what the hell were you doing reeling backwards. There's a thing called Antireverse that you gotta switch off first!!!

With the right current its not a bad trick backwinding to fish under ledges and boats, can be rewarding, thats if you remember to hold the handle to prevent broken knuckles and the worst birds nest you can think of

You just gotta make sure the handle is fimly seated on. Sounds abusive, but hold the rotor fixed, and screw it down as tight as you can.

Should be able to backwind just fine, as long as the antireverse is off! If 2 1/2 turns only gets you tight enough that the handle slips off when you backwind, then it's not tight enough mate!

The screws on each side of the gear are different too. Different lengths and pitches. The Certate has the same kind of setup though, and I don't hear anybody having those issues.

Hi Shortlite.

Nah man I wasn't winding it backwards. It was sitting on the deck and musta shaken loose while travelling to the next spot. When my fishing partner went to pick it up it had no handle on it

He was having a shocker that day to. He picked up the next one and it had no line left on it! Busted off and didn't retie it or clip the line on the spool. do this in a quick boat and rods strapped to the front deck and the line just pours off while travelling!

Damn dude, that's gotta be the crappiest luck ever. Losing a machined handle then spooling a reel is just watching dollars melt away. Guess it would pay to make sure to check everything is in order before blasting off and on arrival too next time.

If you will not be unscrewing the handles regularly or changing sides of the reel, then a dab of the blue thread seal adhesive will work a treat to keep those screws nice and tight. If adhesive is an issue, then a wrap of plumber's teflon tape will do the same trick, but is easier to remove.
